Crossover Trailers

The clock strikes midnight, money changes hands, the crowd is on their feet, and the court is alive with fast-paced razzle-dazzle basketball. These players don't play for a school or a pro team. They play for the street and it's underground...way underground.

I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.

Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

When it comes to movies, I find that good writing, and a few creative ideas, can make up for a lack of budget or otherwise cheap look and feel. When the writing fails however, poor execution becomes ever so much more apparent. Crossover suffers quite badly from this, the cinematography, visual effects, music, setting, and acting are all a bit shoddy, yet it is clear the director was aiming for a film that looked cool, rather than at any quality story telling. The movie suffers further from not knowing what it is, art of it is a sports movie, part of it is a hip-hop gangsta' type thing, and part of it is "love" story. Like many other multi-purpose things, it doesn't do any one ting very well, and ends up feeling very underwhelming. So far so bad, what really makes this thing annoying (and thus makes it worthy of such a low grade) is that all the conflict in it, there are several smaller ones besides the main one, is oh so very forced. As such, they are also quickly resolved without consequence. Forced conflict that has no bearing on the story is a waste of paper, and a waste of my time.

Noah is a student trying to get into medical school on a basketball scholarship. However, neighborhood rivalry makes things more difficult than he originally thought and a somewhat shady sports agent taunts him with dreams of big money. For the record, I watched this movie because it is number 1 on the IMDb Bottom 100 list. This film seems to take more flak than anything Uwe Boll has done - his movies, also bashed, are higher rated but still in the Bottom 100 on IMDb. However, I tried to watch as if I had no knowledge of what others thought it just to form my own opinion free from intervention. The conclusion of my little experiment is the film is really not that bad. Is it stellar? No. But worst movie ever. No. Obviously Preston A. Whitmore II isn't Spike Lee or Scorsese and the film seems over edited, especially in the beginning with constant whooshes and sped up pans. Yes the script isn't a drama masterwork - it includes a pointless 'where are they now' narration/titles at the end, but that is probably more indicative of the film's budget rather than creative choice. Then the actors aren't world class, but who really cares? The story is consistent, remarkably free of profanity or other exploitation and stereotypical portrayal of inner-city life. It has, as another user wrote, "a positive overtone" while staying well clear of being preachy. As far as being worse than Uwe Boll is another thing. Boll makes mediocre made movies with no plot. This film is better than mediocre and has a decent well-intentioned plot to it, which essentially should lift it above anything like 'House of the Dead' or 'Alone in the Dark.' But maybe people are so hungry for sensation these days that they like awful sensation over decent, if not stellar, drama. If that sounds like a drug addiction to you, well you're right, because it is. --- 6/10Rated PG-13: minimal profanity and some sexual content

CROSSOVER has style. Writer/director Preston A. Whitmore II makes up in visual technique and pacing what he lacks in a somewhat tired script, and simply sitting back and watching the movement for this viewer makes the movie worthwhile. The story details the mechanisms of the underground betting on streetball in Detroit - basketball teams that that serve as betting pawns for promoters. Caught up in the flashy court skills are two close friends - Tech (Anthony Mackie), who has a crime record and dreams of plying pro-ball for the NBA, and Noah Cruise (the very fine and hunky Wesley Jonathan) whose goal is to use his streetball earnings to enter college and medical school. The friends' big rival team is headed by Jewelz (actual ball player Phillip "Hot Sauce" Champion) and the betting setups between these two rival teams strikes the flame for the action that follows. Of course there is the requisite romantic interest (both for good and bad) brought to play by fine actors Alecia Jai Fears, Shelli Boone and Eva Pigford and in the end the story is more about friendship and trust and commitment than it is about winning.Whitmore elects to cut and splice his shots of the games like a DJ on a record spin and that aspect of the film is fascinating and creative. He also capitalizes on a fine chemistry that Anthony Mackie and Wesley Johnson generate. The plot is predictable and the story has been done before, but in the end the film satisfies because of the way it plays - and because of the choreography on the court! Grady Harp
