I didn't use to like Tyrone Power. I saw him in The Eddy Duchin Story, Untamed, and In Old Chicago, and thought that was all he could do. If I'd seen him in The Black Swan, The Long Gray Line, and Blood and Sand instead, I probably would have thought he was great. He stars as a matador in Blood and Sand, and while he sometimes doesn't make the best choices, he channels a young George Clooney and makes the audiences root for him.The movie starts out when he's a young kid, dreaming of becoming a bullfighter. This part of the story isn't very interesting because he's made out to be a bit of a scoundrel. He sneaks out of the house past curfew, lies to his mother, steals cigars and alcohol, and gives attitude to adults. When he grows up and becomes Tyrone Power, he's more likable. He woos the beautiful and sweet Linda Darnell and pursues his dream of becoming a famous and respectable bullfighter. But with a fickle critic, Laird Cregar, a rival from childhood, Anthony Quinn, and a sleezy seductress, Rita Hayworth, he has a difficult road ahead of him.I'm really not a Rita Hayworth fan, and I always find it incredibly difficult to understand why she was cast in roles where she's supposed to be beautiful and wildly attractive. The good news is Linda Darnell is very easy to root for. She's beautiful and devoted, and she and Tyrone look great together. Speaking of looking good, even though Blood and Sand isn't a classic I'll probably rent again, it was pretty entertaining since the two good-looking leads spent virtually the entire movie prancing around in very tight matador costumes. Ladies, if your sweetie-pie likes bullfighter movies, you might want to suggest this one so you can both have a good time!

Even in the ring of criticism of this 1941 film, what's all the shouting about? This is basically a run-of-the mill story that has been greatly over-rated through the years. In my opinion, the film goes downhill rapidly when Juan, Tyrone Power, meets up with Rita Hayworth, who is nothing more than a seductive temptress here.As a young boy, Juan showed his arrogance, his defiance and feelings of superiority. He goes off to Madrid comes home 10 years later, a success, though illiterate. Marrying his childhood sweetheart, Linda Darnell, and having a good life, he throws it all away when he meets up with the Hayward character, essentially a woman who gets bored easily and casts people aside like an old shoe.

I give the 1941 film, Blood and Sand, 10 stars because 20th Century Fox had the nerve to pit Linda Darnell against Rita Hayworth against Tyrone Power. WOW! What a combination. And now only do we get to turn into jelly over these three great beauties but also get handsome technicolor and a very good script, as well. Yes, I suppose to some dullards the first 30 minuties might seem slow going but that is only to flesh out the later story when the handsome Power graces the screen. I won't go into the story of Blood and Sand because all on the board know the story and my comments are all about beauty. Today, here in the 21st Century it would be hard pressed to try to come up with a trio of today's actors that might hold a candle to Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell and the gorgeous Rita Hayworth, let's face it film goers, that would be impossible. Why? Because in the Golden Age beauty was an essential feature for it's stars. Errol Flynn, Robert Taylor, and of course the extremely handsome Tyrone Power didn't have to act, just be. Regardless of this fact Mr Power did come through his acting with a great skill. Sure he might have been a tad too old to be Larry in The Razor's Edge, but I still love his acting in that film even if he could never attain the beauty he showed in Blood and Sand. Lament the Golden Age of film only because today's films don't seem to care for screen beauty. Onlny two actors come to mind right now, Matt Damon who is not a beauty but is not an eyesore either and Russell Crowe who has to loose a lot of flab first, then he might just pass as a screen beauty. Thank goodness Fox made Blood and Sand showing us three of the screens great beauties.

Tyrone Power, as handsome as any star in history, with a magnetic screen presence is, however, about as believable in the role of a Spanish bullfighter as Oliver Hardy or Buster Keaton. Rita Hayworth gnaws the scenery like a horde of beavers, but she would be pleasurable to watch just eating a chicken wing. Linda Darnell is so long-suffering she'd depress Norman Bates. Finally Anthony Quinn (and not for the last time in his career), seems to have imbibed a gallon of coffee and taken a handful of downers at the same time, and is undergoing a battle as to which will prevail directing his demeanor.Hayworth and Quinn's paso doble is excellent to watch, yet so "over-the-top" at the same time - but neither of them ever were strangers to "over-the-top." But because, rather in spite of, these aspects, the film is thoroughly enjoyable, and the plot is true to the classic. All of these mannerisms from the cast are outstanding examples of earlier, overdrawn movie drama, from its inception into the 1950's. They provide an added dimension when seeing again films such as this - providing a nostalgic view of this earlier genre, as well as the famous stars of the past.
