A Major Disappointment

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

A tough cop is dispatched to take down a serial killer who has been targeting police officers. I love Jason Statham as an actor but this is easily one of his most weakest films that he has ever done next to Spy where they turned him into an absolute joke. My main issue with the film is exactly the same issue that i had with Homefront a way better movie that worked completely which is the villain of the film played by Aidan Gillen (The Dark Knight Rises) who is really miscasted as this skinny bad guy who wants to eat and watch TV shows on television. Another problem is that the movie is trying to make you care about a drug addict police woman and Luke Evans and both of them aren't really that interesting the best part of the movie is Jason Statham himself and the film starts pretty strong i want lie but the rest of the film is just not that great. If you're a Statham fan give it a shot if you're not skip it 7/10.

Detective Sergeant Tom Brant (Jason Statham) is a hard cop in southeast London willing take anything including a hockey stick to the bad guys. Cops are being targeted. Sergeant Porter Nash (Paddy Considine) is brought in to head the manhunt. He's ridiculed for being gay but finds a supporter in Brant. The killer makes reporter Dunlop (David Morrissey) his contact. Brant and Nash zero in on Barry "Blitz" Weiss (Aidan Gillen) as their suspect. Brant remembers a run-in with him a year ago. This is a hard-boiled cop drama. This wants to be a gritty harsh movie. It does come off as another modern grim British TV cop show with bigger actors. Considine fits right in. Statham seems to be itching to be the Transporter. It wouldn't hurt him to play slightly against type especially in a movie which wants to be taken more seriously. I like the grim tone but Statham may be at cross-purposes.

The best thing about Jason Statham movies is they don't pretend to be great. In this well-worn plot, obsessed, stoic, chaotic cop Brant (Statham) is pitted against maniac murderer Weiss (Aidan Gillen) who is picking off random cops around the city of London. Brant has the job of catching the crazy one and save the city and the cops. Now, if that's familiar to you, there's a reason: from Detective Story (1951), to The Big Heat (1953), to Dirty Harry (1971), to Two Minute Warning (1976) and many others, Blitz is just another in a series of stories of cops who break the rules to break the case.Unhappily, this outing is gratuitously gruesome, unnecessarily violent and quite pedestrian. Indeed, there's an awful lot of running and walking – which, I suppose is a welcome change from the usual car crash-up affairs that infect so many action movies these days. Statham, of course, shows off his agility and skill as he chases the felon over rooftops and through city streets. So, it's well produced, with effectively ugly special effects and well photographed in sleazy spots around London. As the serially deranged murderer, Weiss injects just the right amount of craziness to his portrayal without deteriorating to comedic camp; he's the best actor in this story. On that note, that campy award goes to Ned Dennehy as Radnor, reprising the role of a criminal street opportunist he seems to play ad nauseam in so many UK cop stories. The pragmatic media – always a target for moral correction – is satirized by Dunlop (David Morrissey) who is trying for a journo prize of some sort (I suppose) when he tries to negotiate with Weiss for a scoop. Ultimately, Brant's punishment upon Dunlop is telling – to a point. While it has its moments – especially from Nash (Paddy Considine) – I don't recommend this offering. See it only if you're a die-hard Statham fan. Give it four out of ten.January 2, 2014

Watch this if....you want to watch a movie involving a serial cop-killer that doesn't involve twists and turns or much thought by the viewer. If you like Jason Statham, I would recommend this film to you.Acting/Casting: 6* - Jason Statham plays his typical tough, hard-nosed role in this film and does it well as usual. He is void of feelings, no nonsense and has no care for the law or rules. Most of the supporting cast is new to me, but I thought Patty Considine does a solid job in the lead protagonist role.Directing/Cinematography/Technical: 6* - Again, this movie is straightforward and tells the story in a very blatant manner. The dark lighting in many spots in the film add to the overall dark theme of the story, which was a nice touch.Plot/Characters: 5.5* - There is a serial cop-killer on the loose and Jason Statham and company must find him before he kills more cops. The story isn't anything new and the material is blatant on purpose. For some that will be a good thing and for others it will not.Entertainment Value: 6.5* - Even though it didn't have any twists or turns, the movie was an entertaining watch. If you like this genre of movies or like Jason Statham, then you will enjoy it.My Score: 6+6+5.5+6.5 = 25/4 = 6.25 Email your thoughts to filmwatchinfool@gmail.com
