The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Such a beautiful movie, cheers me up to see it in my darkest moments. Brit Marling and William Mapother are such great actors.

There's so much wrong with this movie, I don't know where to start. I'll make a list:-Terrible cinematography. Has all the marks of a naive film student; every shot is over stylized with no style, and it's put through a blue filter to tell the audience that it's deep and sad. Just ugly The dialogue is horrific and unrealistic. What's up with the weird cosmonaut monologue, out of nowhere?-This movie has two characters, and they're both so one dimensional. The woman is sad and she likes space. The man is sad. They have zero chemistry, and they "fall in love" over a series of scenes in which they frown and don't talk and just act like weirdos. The story just drifts along with no direction or development. It seems like it wants to make some kind of profound statement or ask a deep question. Yet it doesn't. At all. "What if there was a copy of the earth?" Ok. That would be weird, huh? That's it, not explored further. The ending was meant to be open to interpretation or something. It's not. It sucks. It's so bad I barely noticed the acting, which was mostly horrific. One good thing? The Wii scene. This dude is brooding and depressed during the previous scene, and all the sudden we cut to a shot of him sitting down, frowning, playing Wii boxing in front of this girl he's spoken 3 words to. It's actually hilarious. It belongs in the Office it's so absurd.tl;dr - don't even try.

As other has mentioned, this is not a sci-fi movie. It could as well has been that Rhoda won a ticket to Greece and handed it over to John. And I haven't read anyone mention this yet (but I have not read all the reviews). That she even got the ticket in the first place is highly unlikely, considering all humans we have on earth, why would she be a suitable candidate? It makes no sense. And sure, if we accept that she won a ticket, how come that this ticket is just something that you can hand over to anyone else? If it was just a ticket to Greece, all of this would have made more sense. Even if the science fiction tag was removed from this movie, I would still have given it lower rating, but perhaps a 3 instead of a 4. Just the characters themselves, Rhoda is suppose to be really smart being accepted to MIT and all, but I don't see what is smart about her during the entire movie. Similar, I don't get the feeling that John is an intellectual either, except for being a quite good saw player. The movie start by providing these expectations on the characters, but fail to deliver to those expectations. So, it doesn't make much of a drama movie either. To conclude, just don't waste your time on this movie either if you watch it because you like science fiction or because you like drama. There is not much romance either, except for the attempt when John plays the saw for Rhoda. I don't get the feeling of romance though, feels more like an attempt for John to get laid, being alone and I guess horny.

I seem to be in the minority with this review, yet I found this film, slow, too artsy and it just tries TOO HARD. I can appreciate an art film, but Another Earth is just not good. With forced art pushed in your face it attempts to delve into the psyche of humanity. The whole synchronicity angle is an attempt to the "what if" scenario. If that in fact is the attempt, a true look into it would be warranted. Not just the tease of it that this movie delivers. A movie that truly makes you think is a rare gem, while a movie that uses it as a crutch is a fail. This, sadly, is the latter. It was an interesting premise, but had no substance. The menu picture looked great, the meal that was delivered to your table was not. Some might (and judging by other reviews have) enjoyed this film, so if you are into Sci-fi that is slow, hesitant and solely hypothesis driven, you might enjoy this film. Too bad.
