It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

I grew up loving AVGN and still to this day many of his episode (even the newer ones made after this film) will make my 26-year-old self laugh like a child. When James Rolfe announced that he was making an AVGN movie back in 2010, I nearly had a heart attack in happiness. I even drove to Dallas to audition for a role in the film back in 2011ish, and sadly I never got called back. However, after waiting five years of losing sleep and standing tease after tease from Rolfe, I finally saw this film...and it kinda sucked. Years later (just a week ago) I gave the film a rewatch and while it isn't as bad as I remember, but it still isn't great. The biggest problem comes from the unfunny jokes. Like, AVGN is hilarious so it makes no sense why a large amount of the joke falls completely flat. There was this really insulting reoccurring joke about women being seen as sex objects and how one girl is "...a girl, not a gamer"...huh? The sex humor was also way too high, like when a girl mentions that she's not wearing panties and another guy comments about a girls breasts. This style of humor was absent in the AVGN show, which leads into my next big point of criticism: THIS FEELS NOTHING LIKE THE AVGN. Why James decided to go with this plot is questionable. They should've just made the film a giant review to be safe; monotonous and repetitive? Probably, but I guarantee a 90-minute review would've been a much better film. And I'm not sure why James Rolfe seems to think this'll be the only film he'll ever make, which is obvious to what he thinks because of how much of his loves he crammed into this film. It really isn't that hard to raise small funds to make a low budget horror film, nor is it hard to sell a screenplay or find an agent to hire you on projects, ESPECIALLY if you are a huge millionaire with a film degree and a massive resume. Like, go outside, James! Raise $6,000 on Kickstarter or something to write a low budget psychological horror film. You'll make that money in an hour! Stop being lazy. Regardless, this is NOT the movie you'd want to be as your opus.

I do not want to use the words, "disgrace", "abomination", and "gaming" in the same sentence to describe this movie. While they may be true, I want to give this movie a fair review like I would any other game. Having said that, I am a long time fan of the AVGN; I started watching his movies sometime around 2007; but when I see this movie, it does the AVGN a disservice. The Angry Video Game Nerd is all about reviewing bad games; he reviews them so that we don't have to play them. If it isn't about the entertainment value behind swearing and getting frustrated at games (we've all been there) then it is often about learning about bad games that the viewer doesn't know existed. This could be an awesome premise for a movie, but the movie pays no homages to the character as much as it involves him in an adventure; I can remember a similar movie in a similar vane, "Peewee's Big Adventure".The AVGN lives playing bad games as a lifestyle; he also works as a clerk for a video game rental store. The movie throws him into bad acting, stereotyping of nerds, and otherwise a plot with him against the production schedule of a greedy company that holds no values sacred when it comes to gaming. The plot could have stayed there, but it instead throws in a secret government project and unfinished business with the video game crash of 1983.The movie has a few good things going for it; it has the AVGN, the opening montage and music pays homage to him and looks good, the opening documentary on E.T. is not out of place in the movie; the dream scene that pays homage to bad, but classic monster movies of the 1950s-1980s, is also good. However, out of place special effects, over the top characterization, bad action sequences, and bad jokes make this an otherwise bad movie. In this day and age where good movies are plenty, I do not expect to see such a bad movie. The movie is quite possibly the worst I have ever reviewed; I do not recommend this to gamers, and I would suggest fans of the AVGN steer clear of it.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=6156).

Lets be honest, this movie is good for fans of the Nerd. From reference to reference with cameos from other youtube reviewers. Its for people from the Internet, not the people outside of it. James is known for being an Angry Nerd who destroys his games if he gets frustrated/angry.This is clearly a movie for his fans. If you have watched his Nerd Episodes, you should know that he has some horrible effects. This movie is just a much more pumped up version of his episodes (and longer). So if you like The Nerd & his effects, watch it. Its memorable, its hilarious, its tense. Its everything a Hollywood blockbuster could do. (except being memorable)And, if you are new to The Nerd & want to watch this to start watching him. Go watch a few of his videos first, so you can know how he edits, how he acts, and how he performs.Good movie for fans, okay for non-fans.

I've never heard of ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD before I watched this movie, he's one of those youtubers who plays video-games and reviews them, which in all honesty doesn't sound like it would make for much of a movie. But of course this is far from a biography but a low-budget comedy/scifi extravaganza with the nerd playing a version of himself as he sets out to debunk the myth that Atari buried thousands of copies of the video game E.T. (based on the movie) out of shame in the desert, but what he discover is a conspiracy far greater than anyone could have imagined.Reminiscent of FANBOYS (2009) and PAUL (2011) but with a budget of less than a 100th of the latter... Literally, PAUL (2011) was a 40.000.000 dollar movie where as ANGRY VIDEO GAME was 325.000 so yeah as far as special-effects goes it's pretty darn bad BUT that adds a bit to it's charm...Perhaps they were trying to do a little too much at times but it makes it a bit more unpredictable I suppose if nothing else, and they probably wanted to give their fans bang for their buck as it was financed by a fundraiser.Overall though, when I saw it was almost 2 hours long I had second thoughts cause most regular comedies made by the pros don't really have the material to sustain interest for me for that long but the ride was surprisingly smooth in terms of that, didn't even consider hitting the fastforward button once. The acting is so so, but what can you expect from a youtuber? He wasn't terrible at least and fairly funny at times, the rest of the cast were good enough. Entertaining if you're in the right mind for it, just don't expect a Steven Spielberg spectacle of a movie... Probably helps if you've at least played an ATARI or a Nintendo 8-bit console or something of the sorts.
