One of the best films i have seen
... View MoreA film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
... View MoreThe movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View MoreI didn't hate the fact that they were making vampires 'cool' again. Films Like From dusk TIll Dawn, and John Carpenters Vampires, are both classics, In my humble opinion. I also didn't mind the copious amount of gore throughout the film. The shaky camera, in scenes where people are sitting still is unforgivable. The Gummo-like voice overs were too quite to hear. The Acting was all passable. But Danielle Harris' wonky eyebrow still amazes/amuses me, beyond any of the performances in this. Also, thanks for killing her character off. I know the baby probably shows up somewhere in the sequel(which I refuse to watch). But knowing Ms. Harris isn't getting paid for said sequel. THAT is glorious. One last sentence.
... View MoreCast aside any notion of nice, pretty-boys twinkling vampires and replace them with old school vampy monsters, more akin to zombies with snarling, distorted faces and a distinct inability in dying (properly, you understand). However, despite being an unashamed monster movie, Stake Land feels surprisingly subdued for a recent horror film. With its melancholic tone, ravaging of the religious right and focus on characters over action, the film succeeds in being a bit more thoughtful than many of its contemporaries. With fairly few jumps or scenes that are likely to scare a grizzled horror fan, Stake Land is easier to recommend for its realistic world-building, mournful soundtrack and interesting, well-drawn characters. As a boy Martin was orphaned when his whole family was eaten by a vampire, but he survived by being taken under the wing of enigmatic father figure and teacher, Mister. The film goes on at an unusually slow pace and painstakingly constructs a very authentic feeling vision of post-apocalyptic America. Guarded communities living in fear while supplies dwindle, drinking and sleeping together in packed bars until the sun rises and religious nuts taking over the wilderness to rape and murder as they please. The film is most memorable for its details of life after the vampires take over. The small communities that have popped up round the country feel realistic and lived in. A sense of community, as if the vampire apocalypse may help America return to a simpler, more caring time.Stake Land is a very well made film and can be enjoyed as a simple horror film but also as an experience of a post-apocalyptic society and the highs and lows of living in a world with a drastically reduced population.
... View MoreTo be perfectly honest this movie would probably be received better if it was not advertised as a vampire movie. Because I think most people, when they think about vampire, think some handsome man or sexy women who lure people into a dark alley and feed on them. The creatures in Stake Land are nothing of the sort. They are dark, vicious, gruesome monsters which are more like a rabid dog than a person. And boy do they do their job well. The movie itself has a sort of authenticity to it which you wont see in most vampire movies. For some reason the whole thing feels almost real and maybe that is because it combines the ruthlessness of vampires with the heinous sadism of some humans to create a melting pot of post apocalyptic waste land. But there are good people as well and even some creatures, such as children vampires, so called scamps, which do not seem all too hostile. So if you want to see the best vampire movie ever then forget all which you know about vampires and get immersed in a cruel, dark post apocalyptic world.
... View MoreHad to write a review of this little gem. I have not the slightest clue why vampires have been seductive, or erotic at all. I think Gary Oldmans Dracula was amazing. And yes, I fell in love with him too. But I remember being a kid, and vampires scared the crap out of me, and all of my nightmares about them, were exactly like this movie. The world goes into a sort of nuclear winter , without the radio active isotopes floating around, a desert of humanity , living in a barren world of evil marshal law. The vampires have eaten your family, and everyone else's, and the Zealots are calling it the apocalypse, exacerbating their insanity. You're only hope is to become a serial killer of vampires, and apathetic to the human constitution. I was afraid this would happen. I mean, when I was 8. Well, someone took all the aspects of my childhood night terrors to film, and Stake Land is the result. A fine little ditty. I was so stoked when I was watching this. That feeling you get when a movie is really entertaining, and you have been waiting a really long time for one. The fact that it's an Indy film just makes it even better . I read these reviews and so many people on this site really try to be pretentious movie critics. I despise critics of art . It's so easy to sit back and just watch it- what someone else wrote, someone else loved enough to birth , and critique it. I have a feeling that the people who write reviews on here and spit on a good movie ( entertaining is good , by the way) are pseudo intellectuals getting their rocks off , trying to impress us with their art interpretations and patronizing zeal. Some movies aren't art. Some movies want you to have a good time , they don't want to change your life. This movie won't get an Oscar. This movie didn't reach into my chest and squeeze my heart . What it did was keep me entertained . I liked that.
