I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

... View MoreYes, "All Nighter" (2017) is a MOVIE.ORIGINAL - it is not a remake, re-imagining, reboot - or sequel, prequel or whatever. It has no comic-book characters, video-art, SFX and aside from one well-timed punch in the face, no action. But what it does have is a PLOT, CHARACTERS - and J.K. Simmons. And he has charisma, style, that voice and that FACE.It is HE who drives this film.An odd-couple piece, where a busy businessman who has lost contact with his daughter teams up with her dopey ex-boyfriend to try to locate her (Simmons is the businessman). And so the mismatched pair spend the night cruising her haunts and friends...Simple enough - and this would only be a time-passer, were it not for J.K.At one point, a young girl describes him as "do-able" - a sentiment I can live with, given he is only two years younger than me and has the same hairstyle (none).Plus, he is one HELL of an actor.Of course, this indy movie has made no money at all - being ABOUT something - and one wonders how much longer such films will continue to be made. The answer is likely - not long.So check out this gem while you still CAN.
... View MoreFilm to see, I'm not saying it's the success of the year but it's pretty funny. It has nothing new, and is similar to the film of the genre certainly. But it is nice to watch, the actors are good. Sipping in the middle of the day with a nice little coffee and why not girlfriends.
... View MoreI loved this movie. I could see why the dad didn't like the boyfriend in the beginning. And then it made me want to find out how they dealt with one another through the night. This movie got shitty ratings on rotten tomatoes but like all good movies it had my attention from start to finish. It was a fun adventure and I loved it the entire time. I rented a movie yesterday with a 90% rating and I couldn't even finish it so the current rating system has to change. I loved this movie, the actors, the story, and it made me feel awesome. That should be all that matters. Death to Rotten Tomatoes!!!
... View MoreA workaholic father (J.K. Simmons) discovers that his daugther has disappeared, is forced to team up with her awkward ex (Emile Hirsch) to find her over the course of one colorful night. This is probably the highest score you will see in any review for the new comedy All Nighter" because it's not special or anything but I liked it. It's basically just another genre movie for those who just can't get enough of Hangover" type of one crazy night" comedies, last seen as Office Christmas Party" if memory serves me right. Compared to many usual raunchy comedies, there's no large colorful cast with famous faces cameo-ing at unexpected places. It's mostly two leading men driving around, meeting a bunch of comic relief characters ready to out-embarrass themselves and each other. But the reliefs are mostly hits rather than misses (Jon Daly, Taran Killam, the-ever reliable Kristen Schaal from Flight of the Conchords"). Also, Simmons and Hirsch men are good carrying out the buddy comedy part with their strict and authoritative older man / lost younger stoner type schticks. Simmons is at the center of the movie, and deservedly so, because he's offering his usual gold grade-A standard work, managing to wring the most out of even character so shallow and one-note as this must have been on paper. He can bring funny, he can bring heartfelt, he can bring cool every nuance of his performance is just joy to witness. Love him! Think of it as kind of his one man show, if you need another reason to watch it. Yes, it's all been done to death before and the screenplay is actually mediocre. But the result carries itself well enough, comic timing seems spot on across the board, and it ends soon enough, in 86 minutes. I liked the characters, I liked the performers, I was amused and had a couple of good laughs – I would not say this about every one crazy night" comedy I've seen.
