Really Surprised!

... View MoreThere was a time when the Indian film industry was dominated by hilariously entertaining films. These vehicles were definitely overdone terribly in parts. However, they were still quite bearable since they had some shinning moments. Guddu Dhanoa's Aflatoon is definitely bearable but it rarely excels because of several mediocre moments. There was definitely an interesting idea behind the film but the overall execution is pretty below par. Aflatoon tells the story of Raja who wants to procure a great degree of wealth through short cuts in life. Mistakenly appointed as a professor, he saves a girl from getting molested. He falls for a college student who reciprocates his feelings. All is definitely merry until a twist properly introduced Raja's lookalike, Eocky, who has been troubling the heroine's father. The father sees a ray of hope when he meets Raja, the only one who came save him from Rocky's wrath. Is Raja able to eradicate Rocky or not? This partly shabby film answers this question. The story of lookalikes pitted against each other is nothing fresh. However, there are some well handled scenes. Unfortunately, the film becomes mediocre due to rather inconsistent direction. The twist is well placed but the film drags terribly due to some crass comedy scenes and a few songs. Rocky's introduction is superb even if it is heavily inspired by Gary Oldman's introduction from Leon the Professional(1994). Raja's impersonation of Rocky is well demonstrated since it was plotted carefully. However, Rocky's impersonation of Raja is just hard to accept; it is implausible. In addition, the climax is overdone with an overdose of explosions. The entire action scene in the building after the car explosions is incredibly hard to digest because a badly wounded Raja suddenly overpowers Rocky. Aflatoon's music is forced in the film but there is one soulful song. Tu Mange Dil Main De Doon Jaan is outdated but it is definitely hummable. The other songs like Poster Lagwa Do Baazar Mein and the title song are hilariously choreographed which cannot be taken seriously. Akshay Kumar is average as Raja but he definitely nails it as Rocky. His dialogue delivery is decent in serious scenes. However, he seems very uncomfortable in comedy as he overdoes it completely. Urmila Matondkar sizzles the screen with her dances in a few songs, her acting is decent though her dialogue delivery could've been better. Anupam Kher is funny but an actor of his caliber could be doing so much more. The rest provide average support. On the whole, Aflatoon is a decent film in certain parts but the bad parts make this film an average flick at it's best. The movie could've been better.
... View MoreAflatoon is an ordinary masala flick involving twins, or, in this case, identical looking guys. The movie stars Akshay Kumar as a happy-go-lucky young and smart man who looks for the easiest way to become rich. Once mistakenly appointed as a college professor, Raja finally gets the perfect opportunity to make his dreams come true when he meets the young and pretty Pooja. Raja and Pooja ultimately fall in love, but when her father meets him for the first time, he is shocked. Barring the colour of his eyes, Raja looks exactly like a commonly known criminal named Rocky, who has been blackmailing Pooja's father for quite some time now. From then on begins a journey in which Raja helps the police capture Rocky. Aflatoon is partly a romance, partly a thriller, and as expected, it's packed with action and suspense. The film's second half is much more enjoyable because it's appropriately twisted, but the direction often lets the movie down. The songs are catchy but forgettable, and the script itself is not well written, though it does not really matter here. Akshay Kumar plays his two roles quite effectively within the parameters of this film, and he does particularly well with his first negative role, which in itself is rather clichéd but made entertaining by his stylish portrayal. Urmila Matondkar is wasted in an ornamental role, but she is as sexy as ever. Kumar and Matondkar have a great chemistry in the only film they ever did together. Aflatoon is far from being extraordinary, but it is fairly enjoyable and entertaining, more for fans of the genre and Akshay Kumar fans in particular.
