The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

It's 1989 Texas. Don Piper (Hayden Christensen) is a young Baptist preacher with wife Eva (Kate Bosworth) and three kids. His car is crushed by an on-coming truck. Paramedics can't find a pulse. A passing pastor climbs in to pray over him. He revives and is rescued. He is severely injured and suffers a tough recovery. The limited government compensation is taken by the health insurance. He suffers depression. He eventually reveals that during the ninety minutes of presumed death, he had reached heaven.This two hour movie has no reason to be more than ninety minutes whether in heaven or not. The plot has no drama. His depressed character is tiresome. There is nothing compelling. I hoped for some heavenly visions but they are short and lackluster. The spread of his story and his fans are infinitely more compelling than this movie.

Given that the movie was inspired by a massive best seller, and the cast is fairly watchable, it was rather strange that this movie turned out to be what it was. Makes you wonder if they adapted only part of the book.A preacher gets injured in a car accident and has a long painful recovery ahead. There isn't much about the afterlife - just a few minutes where he describes seeing relatives in heaven. But it didn't seem to make him deal with his ordeal any better. The main part of the movie seems to be his painful recovery and the awful things they had to do to his leg and arm. Also the financial problems are shown. It's more like a Lifetime drama. Many people criticze Hayden Christensen's acting but I think he was okay here. Wasn't much to go wrong with. Kate Bosworth looks very groomed throughout the ordeal.

i'm a very devout Christian, so i like Christian movies. I did not like this one. firstly, i thought it would be about his 90 minutes in heaven.... it wasn't. secondly, there wasn't anything in it about Christianity at all, it was weak, without a message, and didn't reveal anything about heaven, other than he saw people he recognize and that they weren't in any pain..... those of us who are christians have already gathered as much when we read the bible, so i didn't care for this movie at all. it wasn't about heaven, and the storyline was boring. Christian movies that were really good were flywheel, facing the giants, passion of the Christ, god's not dead, jonathan sperry, but this one... i really wanted to like it, but no.

I think Mr. Don Piper should WATCH the DOCUMENTARY of JAL 123 (the Japanese aircraft that crashed thru a mountain thousands feet high) which 5 people SURVIVED it.What do we make of those PEOPLE Mr. Piper? profits.. like you? maybe Gods?I'm a fan of HAYDEN and i deeply follow his career but this movie DISAPPOINTED me a lot. I don't see where will it get him !!By the huge EFFORTS he put and his TALENT in acting, HAYDEN could've been NOMINATED twice or more for an Oscar by now if he PICKED the RIGHT PROJECTS.
