Really Surprised!

Absolutely brilliant

The acting in this movie is really good.

I will try to cover what others haven't already said. I was young, but remember the fanfare and excitement about "The Look", the magazine covers, and then - finally - wearing those styles as a young teen from about 1954 forward! The photos are iconic, as well as the American photographer who I believe is purposefully channeling young James Dean's looks and gestures (to my admiration). This just adds to the '50's feel! As for the Nazi-collaborators hints, a very serious matter. I had never thought of it in terms of the French fashion industry! It is like Downton Abbey with the public beauty, wealth and glamour and the working class dressmaking staff and others behind the scenes.The baby out of wedlock, secretiveness, adoption and aftermath all fit the 1950's times, too. Hard to believe now that this was how things were done! BUT THEY WERE! Young women - all women - you MUST politically and socially fight against taking us back to those times!

The series is wonderful on so many levels: well written, splendid acting, gorgeous costume design, intrigue and drama... I just find it disconcerting to hear all the clipped, beautifully elegant, veddy British voices in a show set in post WWII Paris. About Paris fashion, French couture, France recovering from German occupancy. Really, the only thing that seems French is the frequent use of "Monsieur," which gives me a jolt now and then. I'll bet there are plenty of English speaking French actors who would have been great, and they would have made the series more credible. My other reason for giving the show a so-so 7 is that Monsieur Sabine has the dumbest henchman in history. Possible Spoiler: He buries a body in a shallow grave in the garden of the house Sabine bought for his mother! And clubbing the viewer over the head with the frequent foreshadowing shots of clinking tin cans? That is just irritating.

I nearly didn't watch this, as i just assumed WRONGLY it was a story about bringing back fashion in Paris after the war. Boy was I wrong. From the start to the finish i was totally hooked. Yes it has fashion, and pretty feminine ladies, but the story behind the scenes is full of intrigue, treason, murder, collaboration, and so much more. I really really really hope there will be a season 2, i so want to see what happens next. 8 episodes all of them excellent. Oh and the joy of seeing Frances de la Tour once again in an Amazon series, she is so dark and mysterious as the mother of the Sabine brothers...... I loved her character one of my favorite English actresses who can put her hand to anything, comedy or drama. Please watch this series, and review as the more people who do it the more likely we will see the second part in production.

Great drama, and Frances De La Tour was the best. Loved the gowns and the drama. A period piece set right after world war 2. The manipulative mother, the playboy designer, the elegant wife, and oh the outfits. Loved the old cars and the views of Paris. Binged watched all the episodes over 3 snowy days. I can not wait for Season 2.
