Two very, very good TV shows emerged in the same year: Surface and Invasion. Both had excellent casts. Both had real and in some cases new ideas. Both had creative room to grow. And both were cancelled.A real shame, as the shows that DIDN'T get canceled weren't nearly as creative, as personally involving or as, well, "addictive" as these shows were, and the veracity of this is in the rating given to each one of them on IMDb. What a shame. There was the spark of really involving and mentally transporting TV here, and it was extinguished. Too bad for all of us.

This is a wonderful show. I've seen 3 of the 4 discs and am desperately trying to find time to see the conclusion. It has a wonderful mix of actors (full marks to casting) and two main plot lines as described in my summary, one much like the Water Horse movie, the other a sort of marine biologist's X-Files. The CGI isn't state of the art (now) but is used in correct doses and intelligently (it's perfectly believable, don't worry about that, the quality is fine). And, for a change, this sci-fi show does not have a wacky scientist side-kick (it can be a cliché at times) to bring strands of the science fantastic down to earth. Don't get me wrong, I like wacky nerdy side-kicks. But I'm glad in this case this show doesn't have one. Instead, the family Disney quality of this series is wonderful. But its also great sci-fi, and if you ever saw and liked a television show called Invasion then you are going to like this one too.

I happened to come across "Surface" by sheer random luck at the local DVD thrift shop. The synopsis on the back of the DVD box seemed interesting, so I decided to buy it. Although I had no particular expectations to the series, as I had never heard anything about it prior to finding it in the store.I must admit that the 15 episodes were watched in a fairly rapid succession, because the series turned out to be fairly interesting. I watched it over five evenings, watching one disc of episodes per evening. While the show wasn't a dazzling jaw-dropper, it still proved entertaining, because it had a good storyline, and it also had some good acting performances. The story is about a strange breed of massive aquatic creatures that are found roaming the deepest reaches of the ocean. A small group of people have set out to prove the existence of these creatures to the rest of the world, but they face ridicule by the media, and they find themselves face to face with powerful organizations who will stop at nothing to preserve secrets.Right, well, while the story is fairly generic and straight forward, then it is still entertaining and fun to watch. It is the type of story that you quickly get immersed in, pardon the pun. And you want to watch more and see what happens next. The characters in the series were good, well-detailed and chiseled out, and equally so put to life on the screen by the actors and actresses cast to play the various roles and characters. The CGI effects in the show were adequate, and served their purpose quite nicely. However, don't expect to be blown away by dazzling special effects that will leave the rest of Hollywood special effects in its wake. The 15th episode comes to a rather sudden and abrupt halt, especially since the show wasn't carried on. So the audience is left with a somewhat hollow and unfulfilled sensation, because there are so many unanswered questions."Surface" scores six out of ten stars from me. It is watchable and it is entertaining. Just keep in mind that you will not get a conclusion to the series, as it was canceled.

This show is one of the best sci-fi shows I've ever seen. This show captivates the attention of the audience right from the first episode and leaves one longing for the next season to begin, which unfortunately never happened, thanks to the network policies. Well etched characters and a cast appropriate for the characters played. Good amounts of thrill, suspense and emotions mark this show as a definitive seat binder. I never left my seat once I began with the first episode on Netflix. By the end, I was cursing the network for not having giving it another season. This show deserved at the least one more season , for the way its creators have designed and delivered it for the first installment. Its a shame that it got only a solitary season!!!
