Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

There's way too many things I loved about this show to list, so I'll break it down into segments Characters: The characters in this show are some of the most beautifully written I've ever seen in a tv show. Each core character is unique, funny, charming, loveable, layered, complex, flawed, realistic (despite the fact that they're literal space rock people), and all around just beautifully written. However, it wasn't just the brilliance of each character, but the character development they were treated to that had me in awe. Each character is given an arc within which we are gradually exposed to their many dimensions and complexities, we get to watch each character grow and adapt beautifully as people, and subsequently we build a strong attachment with each character, which is what I think all writers who implement character development in their story's strive to do, and Steven Universe does it absolutely perfectly. Aside from the individual characters, the dynamics between the characters are incredible as well. One of the unique things about the show is how it creates such unique beautiful relationships between each of the core characters and how those characters act between each other and in a group and how they grow together. For example, Steven and Amethysts relationship is made unique by how they can relate to each other in that they both feel pressured to live up to what they're supposed to be, Stevens relationship with Pearl is made unique by pearls unique connection to rose quartz, etc. I genuinely have never seen a show in which the characters work in such perfect harmony with one another. Themes/Tone: Usually these are two separate aspects of a show, but for Steven universe, I feel like they go hand in hand. The themes are incredibly intelligent for a kids show. The show deals with complex issues with extreme elegance, dealing with issues such as mindfulness, dealing with anxiety, acceptance, the marketplace of ideologies, etc. and it deals with this issue with a level of intelligence that's even taught me a lot. Beyond the specific issues the show deals with, the overarching narrative of the show is one of love, empathy, acceptance, optimism, and positivity. These values are very much felt in the tone of the show as well. The show is dripping with this schmaltzy, empathetic, optimistic, positive energy, giving it an almost therapeutic quality for when I'm feeling down. This over arching theme and tone of positivity doesn't mean the show is all sunshine and rainbows, however. This show has had some really emotionally intense moments. Steven universe will give you feels upon feels, positive and negative, and at points is so emotionally complex you don't know what to feel. As far as its tone and it's themes go, this show is absolutely perfect. Music: One of the things that surprised me most about this show was the music. This show has some incredible music. The theme song, the end credits song, the frequent musical numbers, and even the less noticeable score, are all incredibly well done. This is one of the few shows/movies I've seen where I'll literally listen to the soundtrack by itself casually because of how good it is. Visuals: the visuals are pretty good. I really like the color schemes and the animation. The Story: I really like the story. The world building is well paced, the sci fi concepts are original, cool, and well conceived, the story arcs are really strong from a storytelling perspective, the stories are all very suspenseful, intense, creative, gripping, and all around it's a pleasure to watch them play out. However, my only issues with Steven Universe do come in the storytelling department. There's often noticeable plot holes, questionable character decisions, and often some of the story arcs feel like they drag on. Aside from those few small issues, this show is absolutely perfect.

Epic fantasy with deep world building. Fantastic music. Characters you care about. Wonderful visuals and style. Positive life lessons and morals.Written by people who seem to care deeply about what they are making, this show keeps getting better and better. Ostensibly a children's show, but I've found I get much more out of the show than my kids do.

At first I found this show to be a charming children's cartoon, but it quickly went to crap after the first couple of seasons. The show shifted from an enjoyable cartoon to leftist propaganda. That change in drove this show into the ground.

Frankly, this show started out mediocre, but beneath its exterior lies a beautifully written world, fantastic characters, and alluring narrative. Really though, you must be willing to tolerate unfortunate amounts of mediocre or bad episodes. I found it difficult to really care about any of the characters beyond the main cast at all for the first 20 or so episodes. The time spent on them felt like a waste that subtracted from the show. Even the main characters weren't the best. It takes until around episode 25 for the show to really pick up. What was originally lacking in interesting characters or fulfilling narrative becomes replaced with dynamic and developing characters that the viewer feels genuinely attached to and a narrative that its entire fan base has spent countless hours theorizing about. The most entrancing aspect of the show, however, is the world. The gems are alien beings that exist as sentient personifications of minerals. Their history and role on Earth is shrouded in mystery and slowly developed within the show, and it never fails to amaze fans when new information about the world is unlocked. Its positive aspects culminate into a brilliant show if only you sift through some of its more mediocre aspects. If it weren't for the episodes prior to episode 25, this show would be an easy 10. As it is, I am almost tempted to give it a 10. Though its fan base is infamous for its unfortunate behavior, its start is rough, and its intended audience is much younger than most people who could really appreciate some of its finer aspects, Steven Universe is a great show that's worth picking up if you're at all into animated television.
