The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.

Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

I love this show and I want more it! I watched all thirteen episodes yesterday and today. Folks can go on and on about this and that, unrealistic, corny, not exciting enough, but bottom line, it is great to see women and people of color in strong roles. We don't see enough of that when we turn on action television. There could be a little less stereotyping of Middle Eastern people as the leaders of terrorism. The show itself disproves the stereotype a little as there are those persuaded to follow (aka "the disenfranchised"), and yes, there are obviously some evil Americans, but still, the leaders of all terror are without a doubt shown to be Middle Eastern, supporting the stereotype. That could be mixed up a bit. Other than that, this show is a good "escape from the world and immerse yourself in a story" television. And it does this without having your anxiety cranked to 11. I have enough anxiety from real life. "State of Affairs" has given me good entertainment and let me relax while watching. I want another season!

Reading other reviews, this show has been damned for 1. Heigl is an executive producer therefore has a vested interest in promoting her character 2. She's too young for her high level role 3. She's got a daft name in Charleston 4. Poorly acted and poor plot. Let's look atthese 1. Check out the exec producers for, amongst others, TheBlacklist, CSI (all iterations) and Bones (now there's a show long pastit's best used by date that's now smelling). 2. Heigl is in her mid 30's but I didn't hear any similar criticisms of the character of Jack Ryan in the same role. Also, a bit older but is 44 too young to actually be the President (JFK). 3. And did others say Indiana Jones had a silly name. I've heard a lot of silly names but this is no worse than many 4. Subjective but it's not bad. Not great but not bad.So, to summarise, it hasn't set the TV world alight and I can't see it winning awards but I'm happy enough to while a way an hour watching it as reflected in my score. As an aside, I knew about POTUS and also FLOTUS but as the spouse of the President is a man, what DO you call him? FHOTUS doesn't trip off the tongue so easily.

I'm not sure why so many people have left bad reviews for this show, there truly are a lot of snobs writing reviews here. It seems like a lot of them are from people who dislike Katherine Heigl as well. Who cares! The plot is great and it has picked up pace in the most recent episodes. No it is not Homeland, but what do you expect from a show on NBC? The main reason I watch movies and television is for an escape from reality and I really could care less if a show doesn't accurately portray the government and CIA. If I wanted this, I would watch a documentary, which I do quite frequently. If you take it for what it is, a fun, entertaining action/drama, then you will enjoy it.

I binge-watched this show today (5/6 episodes) and really enjoyed it. Katherine Heigl is excellent as Charleston Tucker and Alfre Woodard shines as President Payton. I also enjoy seeing Courtney Vance as the President's husband and James Remar (who was fabulous in Dexter and Sex and the City) in the role of Syd. I don't understand all the negative reviews. It's very well done, especially for a network show and the issues it explores are very timely. I think people need to give it a chance. Each episode held my attention and I could not wait to watch the next one. In fact, I'm off to watch Episode 6 right now.
