    All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

    The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

    There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

    I will be very short.The 1., 2. seasons = fantastic! The 3. = rubbish! How they could made such a bad, full of crap 3. season, I do not understand... It would had been better to remain only two seasons. The first two seasons were a great historical drama, but third? I don't know what to name it... No story, bad acting, previsibility, and political correctness pushed to the maximum... :( It seems as this movie does not have any script, but the actors were put to make up independent scenes, which they put together at the and...

    I had to watch a civil war themed movie for class, and I am glad I chose this one. The movie was really good, and appeared very realistic. It was a good representation of how the tensions between North and South were running high before the war. George and Orry were from different backgrounds, but got along and agreed because they knew everyone had different views and respected that. But not all characters felt the same way, and it caused a few problems in the movie. Also, Madeline and Orry were in love, but the father of Madeline separated them so that Madeline would marry the man he had chosen for her. He wanted what was best for him and his plantation. This selfishness caused more problems in the movie, since Madeline and Orry were still in love, even though Madeline was now married. His selfishness was similar to that of many Southerners, which helped lead to the civil war.

    As a little girl growing up in Charleston, I can remember all of the fuss during the filming of North and South. It not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it. It is still just as enjoyable to watch 30 plus years later and I can now enjoy it all over again with my children. This is a love story between George and Orry, two best friends who meet at West Point and eventually have to fight for their beliefs opposite each other in the Civil War. It follows their lives and the lives of their families as the world changing war takes place. The acting was excellent, the wardrobe was stunning, and you feel like you are living through this plot. For all of my fellow Patrick Swayze fans, in my opinion this showcases him at his finest. This movie does an excellent job of showing the struggles of both the north and the south without showing favoritism to either. It was a beautiful story showing the horror of slavery but also showing that not all southerners agreed with that of life. You felt deeply for all those involved (well, other than Bent, Justin, and Ashton). Do yourself a favor and watch this right now if you haven't already seen it! You'll be so glad that you did! With that said, I like to pretend that the last book/movie does not exist. I much prefer the ending of the original 1985 series.

    North and South is a miniseries from the "golden age" of television miniseries in the 1980s, which was a time for long, sweeping epics with high production values and lots of star cameos. It is, for the most part, excellent for what it is, although I personally prefer the less soap-opera like elements of the story and the overall sense of history.James Read and Patrick Swayze deliver excellent performances--especially Read, whose George Hazard serves as kind of an emotional anchor in the midst of the often melodramatic story. The series also contains top-notch work from Kirstie Alley, Wendy Kilbourne, Hal Holbrook, Lewis Smith, Genie Francis, Georg Stanford Brown and others. The costumes, filming, sets and music are all first-rate as well.Don't take it as a history lesson, but take it for what it is--a well-made, sweeping epic from a bygone era. Book 2, which followed a year later, is also excellent, but I would advise viewers to skip Book 3, which came out 8 years after Book 2 and was not nearly as good as the first two parts. Books 1 and 2 are classics, though, even with their soapier elements, and they are well worth watching.
