a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
... View MoreAll of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
... View MoreThe film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
... View MoreWorth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.
... View MoreDid anyone actually watch it? I put the DVD in and wanted to take it out soon after. Watching the pilot I found it seemed to ignore things like continuity and information that others couldn't possibly have. One minute they are making it sound like the group is being taught about the Monster Minds for the first time. The very next second they know everything about fighting them and defeating them as if they have been doing it for years. Then we are supposed to believe that a businessman who transports people and things for a living decides since the payment wasn't real that rather than dump them on the nearest planet in favor of paying customer's he is just going to keep them on until he gets paid even if that never happens? Most cartoons of the 80's showed more intelligence than that. This cartoon is constantly contradicting itself and allowing the good guys to win no matter how many times they screwed up. I like 80's cartoons because they often showed a level of thought that today's cartoons don't seem to think kids capable of. Jayce was a precursor to those.
... View MoreI appreciated this average cartoon as a child because it was the only decent thing on on a sunday morning. The one thing i found funny was when saw boss at the at end of every episode after being beaten as usual said something like "I'll get you next time Jayce". Worth watching on tv if nothing else is on.
... View MoreI remember it when it first aired on French TV in 1985. It was an instant success in France, and being crazy about animation, I became a fan at once. And apparently, I'm still a big fan, 18 years after, when I see that I can watch 8 episodes in a row every evening since I started to watch the newly released DVDs."Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors" (or "Jayce et les Conquérants de la Lumière" in French) has something unique that reminds me how great those collaborations between France, Japan and USA were at the time. Jean Chalopin had created "Ulysse 31" and this show was a coproduction between France and Japan; he also gave us "Les Mystérieuses Cités d'Or", another collaboration between France, Japan and USA, like "Jayce".. Those three shows were some of the best ever on TV, along with the best Japanese animated shows.Back to Jayce.. The story was excellent, but what strikes me the most is the weird atmosphere, a mix between space opera and magic. In each episode we discover a new planet with new rules (those planets can be considered like different countries) and I must say that some scripts were particularly good, with thought-provoking ideas. I cannot forget also that the great appeal of the series are the characters : Jayce, Herc, Gillian, Flora, Oon. You soon get very attached to them and their personalities, thanks to the situations, dialogues and voice actors. I want to pay a tribute to Gilles Laurent who dubbed our hero Jayce in French, he is one of the best voice actors ever. The vehicles also make this series special, and the Monster Minds are so funny. Each episode is a delight.I think this series is so good that it should have a sequel.. Hey, Jean Chalopin, give us Jayce back, give us more magic !!
... View MoreIt is a shame that this classic series only lived long enough for 65 episodes. It's an even bigger shame that it no longer airs on television, and cannot be found anywhere on video except Ebay. This show was a great mix of sci fi and fantasy. It had a very unique premise: Audric, a brillant scientist, accidentially creates a race of mutant plants, known as the Monster Minds, after trying to create a plant that would end all starvation. After the MM attack and take over his laboratory, Audric flees and works to find a way to destroy the Monster Minds, eventually developing two halves on a Magic Root, but before he could figure out a way to join the two halves, which would ultimately put an end to the Monster Minds, the MM strike once again, and Audric gives Oon, his Eternal Squire, one half of the root, and sends him to his son, Jayce. Doing this, it would prevent the Monster Minds from aquiring the two halves, and would give him more time to figure out a way to join the two. So, Oon is sent on his way, and Audric disappears with his half of the root. Once Jayce has the other half, he assembles The Lightning League, and begins his quest for the search of his father, and to put an end to the Monster Minds. What more could you want in a show? A brilliant story line with great characters and lots of action and adventure. Plus, it has one of the best theme songs ever, and the show's animation was terrific for a mid-80's cartoon!
