The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

This one conbines everything you expect from a good SciFi Show, an interesting and developing story, consistent characters, good action scenes, surprising turn arounds, decent CGI and last but not least convincing actors. Hard to understand why they have stopped producing this show, will be hard to find something as good as this one.

This series, and many like it, use ripoff formula genre ideas sometimes going back decades, and worst of all is the dumbing down fake fundamental science in the series. 1. For action we have a few non-essential people dying every few episodes - can't kill off the money. Actors are a demographic mix of every ethnic & gender type put in not because of what they personally can offer. Resumes - mostly TV series no-names, and placement demographics seemed artificial as if to attract viewer money. 2. Fifteen seconds of action, on average, every episode. The rest of the time (95% of filming) is on an easily constructed studio stage or some abandoned industrial building. And, 95% of those scenes are just a single camera panning between talking heads. To spice things up we have a a few shots of muscle guys in tight t's, or women in tight fake black leather costumes. 3. Besides once an episode CGI of space ships the main future prop is an android who, of course, talks like an android. The other props are the stereotypical hanging computer displays w/cute graphics. That's as forward thinking as the writer's can copy from other sci-fi movies. 4. The usual stupid level references to fake science concepts i.e. tearing holes in space-time; Blink drives (whatever); shields are down; power reserves are low (ideas used decades ago). Hope for colonies on planets, but where? There aren't any within near light speed travel in one's life time. 5. Lots of names starting w/the letter z, with accompanying one or two syllable names. Of course, evil corporations, and empires - again. Samurai swords and period clothing - what year are we in? 6. Spaceship (Black ship?) design would fail middle school science aerodynamics, as would all the sound effects in space of lasers and ships swooshing by, and those supposedly, and factually incorrect, stars streaming. Conclusion: Creative educating while entertaining - grade F.

If you love Firefly, you will love this. Although Firefly's characters are more lovable, Dark Matter's characters are more interesting. Dark Matter has better effects, production value and plots but you will grow to love the characters as much as Firefly's characters.I didn't get into this show when it first came out in 2015, because the first episode implied a dour, serious and depressing sci fi show. Thankfully this time around I believed the IMDB ratings and sat through the first few episodes. After establishing the back stories and the world, Dark Matter starts to shine with gripping twists and plots that make you come back for more.Much of the time watching it, I think to myself how thankful there are 3 seasons because the episodes are so great. It's the Firefly we could have had, the Firefly we deserve.
