    FirstWitch

A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.

In the hilarious, short-lived sitcom The Grinder, the idea of a TV lawyer deciding to be a real lawyer is played for laughs. This is naturally what you would expect in any series in which an actor decides to be a real-life version of his role. So the first surprise is Carter plays it straight. This actor isn't an egomaniac out of his death; he's a smart guy with some skills. The script of the first episode is an obscene collection of ridiculous coincidences and random incidents stacked up randomly. It makes no real sense. Meanwhile, the tone of the series is shaky and the series can't quite figure out how to keep it's light banter going smoothly while making you care about the characters. The acting is tolerable, but the actors are required to do things like all laugh awkwardly together to indicate camaraderie. It's like someone fed a bunch of cliched detective series into a computer and it spat out this script.Look, I understand that not everything on TV can be good, but it seems reasonable to ask writers to at least attempt to not be bad. But there is an alarming lack of effort put into crafting the show. It's clearly designed to float on charm and banter, but neither is that strong.I can take a certain amount of stupid (I watched the whole first season of Deception, after all), but here the stupidity isn't balanced out with any redeeming features.

It is charming- funny. lighthearted- but is also sweet at heart. I have really enjoyed it- although I really thought I wouldn't enjoy something this light-weight. It is deceptive- it has a solid core of characters as well as the comedy. I love Dot and her husband. I love seeing Canada. I look forward to it each week, now. I hope it will be renewed for a second series.

We looked forward to this series as it sounded like it would be similar to "Castle". Unfortunately it is not. The plots are just terrible and the writing poor. Even for a Canadian production it is bad. The lack of proper Police procedure is a joke, almost like the police on Corner Gas, except that show was a comedy and brilliantly written. Jerry O'Connell has so much more to give than this series allows him. Unless the writing and plots improve this series will be short-lived.

SPOILER: Barely managed to make it through episode 2. A suspect holds 2 people using a prohibited gun (barrel under 4.2 inches with a double whammy of being a 32 calibre, also prohibited in Canada) and the main female character who is a police detective, and in the first episode accepted when a civilian said that they had a permit for the hand gun they carried (never going to happen unless you are politically connected or are really rich), didn't arrest anyone for having this prohibited hand gun. Not to mention that Carters live in help frequently pulls a shotgun on people and they never get arrested! Jerry should get his secret identity back.
