As a boy, Tony Washington witnesses the fatal stabbing of his father after he goes to the rescue of a young black woman, Molly Mokembe, who is being sexually molested by two teenage thugs.Cut to the present day, and Tony (now played by heavy metal singer Jon Mikl Thor) is a musclebound, long-haired baseball player who, like his father, has no time for hoodlums: when his local grocery store is held up by armed robbers, Tony steps in and saves the day (the Italian shopkeeper is-a so-a grateful, he lets-a Tony have his-a groceries for-a nothing!).Unfortunately, as Tony crosses the road with his freebies, he is run down and killed by a gang of no-good punks, lead by psycho Jim Batten (played by Shaun Levy, now a successful Hollywood director). When Tony's mother sees her son's lifeless body, she calls for Molly (Manuska Rigaud), who uses her voodoo powers to resurrect Tony from the dead. Armed with his trusty metal baseball bat, shuffling zombie Tony goes looking for revenge. As I type, Zombie Nightmare is currently sitting at #53 on IMDb's bottom 100 movies (most likely thanks to being featured on MST3K); but while I cannot deny that the film is no classic of the zombie genre, and is sadly lacking in both the gore and nudity one expects from 80s trash (a blonde cutie in her underwear doesn't cut it), neither is it deserving of such contempt. I've seen hundreds of films that are tougher to endure than this one, which at least entertains with its 80s cheesiness and sheer silliness.Boasting a rocking metal soundtrack courtesy of Motorhead, Girlschool, Thor, Deathmask and Fist (no, I've never heard of the last two bands either), an early performance from Wayne's World babe Tia Carrere (schwing!), Adam 'Batman' West as a police captain with a dark secret, hilariously bad zombie make-up, terrible acting (Manuska's Haitian voodoo routine is a masterclass in over-acting), some really nasty 80s fashion, and a fun finale in a foggy cemetery (smoke machine on overdrive!) that sees West dragged to hell, Zombie Nightmare is definitely worth a go for fans of z-grade horror.

Zombie Nightmare: 2 out of 10: Ah late Eighties Heavy Metal Canadian Horror. Zombie Nightmare stars “musician” Jon Mikl Thor of the fine ensemble Thor whose overlooked musical gem "Rebirth" is featured on the soundtrack. Jon is a Herculean chap whose muscular endowment overshadows his thespian gifts. He is killed by a group of teenagers in a hit and run and is resurrected by a Voodoo princess to seek his revenge. In zombie form, Thor resembles a confused mime and the focus on the story quickly moves to the fine detective work on display by top cop Adam West. West enters into to character so deeply as to hypnotize the audience with his sheer knowledge, He represents not just one man but encompasses all Canadian law enforcement knowledge throughout the years.Among the wayward teens is a young Tia Carrere, Tia shows both her mastery of acting as well as running without a bra that has served her so well.Ah hell, whom am I kidding? The movie is ten times worse than you imagine and Manuska Rigaud’s performance as the Voodoo priestess is a hate crime in most countries. Only braless Tia and her co-star Linda Singer in a hot tub prevent this from a 1 out of 10 score. The Mystery Science Theater 3000 version: 8 out of 10: is the way to go. The riffing is very good though the movie clearly provides ample material for both mike and the bots. The commercial breaks are also breezy and fun.

You would think that a movie with zombies(two of 'em!),bloody revenge, Tia Carrere, voodoo, a weird voodoo priestess, heavy metal music, pasta flingin', screamin', and nanananana Batmaaan would have at least some entertainment value. Well... It doesn't. I'm glad the filmmakers and cast seem to be good sports about what MST3K did to it. I have to say, Zombie nightmare is one of my all-time favorite episodes of that show. The only reason I didn't give this stupid movie one star is that it sort of had a semi coherent plot.I usually only rate movies one star if the plot is especially weak or incoherent. Um... I have to finish 10 lines so,uh, I'd just like to say if you have to see this movie, catch it on the MST3K DVD on volume 15.

But that doesn't make this good. First, let me see if I can run down the plot. Some really muscular guy gets hit by a car driven by some seriously badass punks. I wish I could be as incredibly badass as those spaghetti throwing punks! The guy dies and the kids drive on, and the really badass punk among them gives a kind of odd Hamlet speech about how killing the guy was like snuffing out a candle (speaking of candles, check out all those candles in the Voodoo woman's house!) So then the guy's mother gets this Voodoo witch to resurrect her son to send him on a killing spree. A young detective under the supervision of Adam West (Yay!) starts to investigate this as all of the teens die. Then one of the teen's fathers gets killed for some reason that isn't really explained, after which the Voodoo woman, Adam West and the detective go off to the cemetery where we get this freaky twist ending that doesn't contribute to the movie, doesn't really make any sense, and doesn't really conclude anything. Add to this all of the bad acting, bad lines, unfortunate pacing, and you end up with a pretty unusual viewing experience. I didn't really hate this, actually. I definitely recognize that it wasn't good, and I certainly wouldn't want to see it again, but there's no cause to blow this one out of proportion by say, putting it on the bottom 100 list. In reality, I would give it a 1, but to protest its position, I'm giving it a five. I can't bring myself to go any higher.
