The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

This is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.

Some movies don't need to be made...simple as that. This applies 100% to "Hannibal Rising", a film that is completely unnecessary to the Hannibal cannon and should never have been made. For a basic plot summary, "Hannibal Rising" tells the story of young man Hannibal (Gaspard Ulliel) who comes into his psychotic personality after a terrifying experience involving his young sister & cannibalism. After becoming an orphan and moving in with his aunt Lady Murasaki (Li Gong), Hannibal vows to find his sister's tormentors and inflict grisly punishment on them.Besides all the other laughable stuff (for example, the young Hannibal putting on a barred mask) in this film, the glaring weakness is easy to identify: Hannibal Lecter was scary because he couldn't be understood. As human beings, it is difficult for us to understand the mentality behind a cannibal, and that is why Anthony Hopkins' Lecter was so creepy. Trying to explain Lecter's flesh-hungers is not only probably impossible, but also just plain dumb. There needed to be some endgame thoughts before even pitching this movie, such as "what purpose will it serve?" or "does this story really need to be told?".It doesn't help that the acting is nothing special and there is no psychological tension whatsoever. Pretty much just emotionally flat all the way through.Overall, then, I consider "Hannibal Rising" to be one of the most ill-conceived movies of all-time. It didn't need to be made, and then even when it was it was made very poorly (likely in order to try and attract a younger audience to the Hannibal franchise). Save yourself over two hours of boredom and skip this one.

I found this movie to be unnecessary the plot is interesting but is executed very poorly and is just boring everything was predictable. I absolutely despised the characters they all seemed life less and generic and forgettable compared to silence of the lambs which had some of the most iconic pop fiction characters. The main problem with this movie is that only the first 20 minutes and the last 30 minutes really matter since the rest is just filler to fill the 2 hour 9 minute screen time the filler is so boring i would rather stare at the DVD cover for 2 hours and 9 minutes. This movie is an absolute disgrace to the masterpiece that was silence of the lambs. I hope with all my heart that this review will save the poor souls who are about to watch this.

The movie presents the life of the young Hannibal Lecter which is passing through difficult moments, being witness to the murder of his family during World War II. The movie is an action from the beginning till the end, in which Hannibal seeks the revenge for the death of his family. The character of the Hannibal it is played by Gaspard Ulliel that makes an exceptional role. The way that its family is murdered, puts its mark on the way that Hannibal acts. He is become more furious, he calculates every move and most of all, he is discovering his instinct and pleasure to kill. "Hannibal Rising" it's a very good movie because it is not necessary to read the book or to see the previous movie to understand the story. Still, it's something that I would have liked to see more in this film: the deaths of the men should've been more gruesome and painful than the average kill to show how twisted Hannibal was and how badly he wanted them to pay for devouring a small child without remorse. Overall, it's one of the best movies I've seen lately...and Gaspard was really good in this movie!

Yes, it does not have the vibe "The Silence of the Lambs" had, yes it is bloody and brutal, but that is the whole point, it doesn't need to be insanely complex or psychologically thrilling, this movie is meant to be completely different, this is what everybody was always curious about. We all loved Lecter and his mysterious presence, but for all these years nobody knew how he began his cruel ways, in this movie everything unfolds and it really adds to the franchise. So what that it is bloody? From what we have heard in previous films all of them would have needed to be as bloody as this one, since Lecter is considered to be an incredibly sick serial killer, who also, appears to be a cannibal and that is exactly what is showed here. In my opinion Gaspard Ulliel did an awesome job as Hannibal Lecter, he had the vibe of the older version of Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, of course. This is a decent way to revitalize the franchise, so we are not out of hopes for seeing a sequel to 2001's "Hannibal", Lecter films are not quick to come out and are all in a strange order as we know, so this lays the ground for a new film, maybe in 2020? Who knows.Overall it is very entertaining, shows us what people were eager to know about Hannibal Lecter, his roots, reasons, etcetera. Delivers suspense for sure, isn't just a blatant killer movie, has decent acting. The only weakness in my opinion was how they decided to incorporate different countries here, but everybody seems to speak English fluently, even in 1952 Russia :D I know it sounds funny, but nonetheless, it is worth watching, that is the only notable flaw.
