Surprisingly incoherent and boring
... View MoreHow wonderful it is to see this fine actress carry a film and carry it so beautifully.
... View MoreThis is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.
... View MoreThere's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.
... View MoreThis movie is bad. Bad acting, bad dialogues, bad Music, bad sets, bad effects, bad Story, everything is bad. You know, there's movies which are so bad they're good again, movies so bad you can actually laugh about it, and then there's this. Cringeworthy movie. The plot makes no sense, some of the text is pain-inducing, and you have to wonder... Who greenlighted this? I mean, seriously, there can't actually be a Studio which says "OK, let's get this out on DVD"... Somebody must have realized that this is crap?I hate Uli Lommel for this. I don't know how to describe it... Take ANY Uwe Boll movie, multiply the bad with 100, and you get this... It isn't even a real movie. I've seen wedding Videos with more effort put in it.
... View MoreCAUTION: Plot spoilers present.By day, Joe Singer works as a police officer for the LAPD. By night, however, he moonlights as a serial killer, abducting various women & subjecting them to tests before killing them by lethal injection & dumping their bodies in bushland. But his violent & disturbed activities will catch up with him when a group of voodoo priestesses reanimate the victims as zombies in order to get their revenge.Ulli Lommel is probably the German New Wave's most prolific director – a hack who has made various genre films, mostly revolving around serial killers (is it me or does this guy actually have some kind of obsession with such people?). His career ranges from such esteemed highs as the 1970s German feature The Tenderness of the Wolves to the 1980 independent hit The Boogeyman, made when Lommel moved to the USA. With the coming of the post-millennial zombie revival, Lommel figured he could also do a zombie film & make some money off the back of the genre. Well, it would have worked in theory at least Zombie Nation is a film that seems to be stuck between two different kinds of film – the zombie film & the abstract serial killer rubbish that Lommel had been making for a very long time. Lommel's forte is in making ultra-cheap serial killer features which were so overloaded with artistic pretensions that they would invariably collapse into ridicule (having said that, some of his films were at least watchable to a certain degree with some disturbing visuals & brutal writing – Zodiac Killer would be the best of the bunch). Lommel can't seem to leave his comfort zone enough to make a proper zombie film without involving serial killers in it so Zombie Nation would have to be one of the more coherent of the bunch of ultra-cheap films that Lommel had made since the coming of the millennium but that is not saying a hell of a lot.Zombie Nation is so overloaded with Lommel's artistic pretensions that even the title suffers from this – the title is broken up into syllables with each syllable getting its own frame (something like ZOM – BIE – NA – TION). The zombies, for a change, are not mindless killers, although Lommel doesn't seem to know how zombie films work, judging by the zombie murder victims walking around with no rotting bodies but only an overload on black eye-liner that makes them look like human racoons. The other thing that I found inept was Lommel's poor writing skills. The idea that a patrol cop would abduct various women during traffic stops, take them to a secluded location, kill them then stuff their bodies into duffel bags before dumping them into scrubland while escorted by his own partner is one that beggars belief. Sure, Internal Affairs is called in but it is far too late to save the film.Having said all that, there are occasional moments that Zombie Nation comes around slightly to say something about the state of things. Lommel might only be able to make abstract serial killer features but he does it quite well enough to shock & disturb. The killer's motivation is revealed to be the result of abuse suffered from his psychotic mother, a demented head of the local asylum who would routinely abuse her charges (although it does get a little murky as to what the purpose of the tests that the killer is subjecting his victims to, but I guess that would be asking too much for such a film like this one). If I had to make a recommendation, it would be to only seek this one out if you have an interest in abstract serial killer works or are a fan of Lommel's (not too many of them around these days). Otherwise beware.
... View MoreNo scratch that, Zombie Nation IS the worst zombie movie ever and down there as among the worst movies ever made. As terrible as Vampegeddon, Zombie Night, Vampires vs. Zombies and Dead Men Walking were even they couldn't come close to the unwatchable ineptitude that is this dreck! There are movies that are so bad it's good, but there are movies that leave you reeling in disgust at how intelligence-insulting it is and ones where you struggle to see how anyone can find any good value in it, and Zombie Nation is one of them in the worst possible way. It's one of the most amateurish-looking movies there is, the sets look like someone's basement, some of the lighting is so dark that it's not easy to make out what's going on, the "raccoon-mask-like" make-up for the zombies can't even pass for make-up(likewise with their costumes which look like cheap Halloween hires) and the camera-work and editing are so jumpy and all over the place that it makes your eyes hurt. The audio is recorded so low that it's not always easy to make out the dialogue and when the volume turns up in "changing the volume on the radio" fashion you're not missing much when you're hearing repetitive dirge-like music that sometimes takes away from the mood and dialogue so cheesy it makes the toes curl that makes kindergarten talk seem mature in comparison. The story is barely there, instead it moves along at a snail's pace and is full of random scenes with absolutely no relevance that you have no clue what's meant to be going on and action scenes that look incomplete and reminiscent of playground bullying. The characters, well the few that show any kind of relevance to the story, are obnoxious and without personality, most of the time they're like walk-ons, while the zombies have barely any screen time and when they do appear they look terrible and are the most emotionless and least threatening zombies imaginable. Lommel's direction is typically inept, and the acting gives the impression that nobody wanted to be there which accounts for the uniformly lifeless-as-a-corpse performances. To conclude it is very difficult to put into words how awful Zombie Nation is, I really try to be a subjective person and am very respectful of other people's opinions but given the nature of the movie this is a very rare exception where it is impossible to be subjective. Only to be seen if you are curious as to see whether Lommel is capable of making a halfway-decent movie or whether it would be another one of his atrocities(of the movies I've seen of his so far, all of them have been that). 0/10 Bethany Cox
... View MoreWow! Zombie movie! I really do enjoy watching good ones. Let's seeee...we have a something here. At first glance, the cover art caught my eye (and I'm nearsighted) and I thought to myself "Hmmmm...looks..frightening enough. Lemme check this one out just for the hell of it!" Before I knew any better , I found myself clicking on the title and I was watching .....in abject horror as the movie went from being bad ...really bad to worse! Bad acting....no direction...no script ...no storyline to speak of ...no zombies for that matter just women looking more like they missed the mark with the eyeliner. Talk about ur dark circles! Had their eyes been shut , i would have sworn they were wearing painted on sunglasses. Um...hey..didn't anyone tell these "actresses" that ppl who return from dead are supposed to LOOK the part? And how bout the "set"? Can't say a big budget was spent on that fabulous furniture store / police precinct eh? Add to this mess a heavily accented psychotic cop with a penchant for needles and a clueless partner and there u have the movie in a nutshell. Cop kidnaps..murders his victims. Victims return to exact their revenge. Wow! Kudos for (lack of ) originality. Maybe next time (if that's even remotely possible) the "director" will direct his way straight into any profession but film making. Once more I ask "Is it...safe?" and the reply I keep getting after viewing this mess is a resounding, thundering HELL NO! My eyes! My EYES!Must find...eyewash...I've gone from nearsighted to blind..a few brain cells have been depleted. Must find good movie because this .....wasn't it. Excuse me now ..I must go worship at the altar of Romero and beg forgiveness for the sin of having laid eyes on wht could possibly be the worst piece of dreck ever put on film. Now someone please pass the air freshener... smells like poo....
