The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

In the sub-genre of horror films set in underground settings (ex. The Descent), if this is not the worst, then it's close to it. 8 people (including 2 women) decide to explore an unknown cavern in Russia, someone dies, they get stuck inside, and then things get worse. I didn't mind that the story was simple, I didn't mind so much that the characters were woefully underdeveloped (except perhaps the black guy), but I did mind several other things. First and foremost, there was some truly obnoxious camera work, as in very shaky and put at weird angles for the sake of being original. A chaotic uncontrolled camera supposed to show confusion and/or tension failed miserably, in part because of the atrocious editing and frenetic cuts. Whenever some action occurred, it seemed to me that the "creators" were basically hiding, cheaply, what was happening by combining one or more of the following: mad shaking, constant perspective change, black image and/or strobing pictures lasting a fraction of a second. You'll get several darkness moments that rely on screams and sound effects for scares. Those moments become tiresome, don't scare due to underwhelming sound and feel like a cheap way to fill up screen time in an already short movie. When it's not dark, your vision gets disturbed by the lights on the characters aimed straight at the camera or lens flares. Bad sound mixing sometimes hinders comprehension. It's a shaky cam venture kind of like the Blair Witch Project, but there was no logical reason for it. Even for artistic reasons, it was done horribly. Special effects were virtually non-existent, except for one pretty gory early body, and the creature was hidden until the very end. You'd think that was conducive to suspense and mystery, but not really. If I had paid money for this film, I would have felt cheated.Rating: 2 out of 10 (terrible)

I've seen some crap-poor movies in my time on this earth, but sweet lord did this movie sucks! Apparently, the antagonist is Two-faces Russian son, who found a cave, got trapped in it, yet seems to be able to teleport throughout the cave (e.x. he goes back up to the top of the cave, seals them in, then somehow makes it back down into the cave. Why the eff did he not just leave years ago?) He is also either bullet- proof, or has mutant-like healing powers. I would guess the latter, since he can also phase through walls. Did I mention that all this "brutal" killing is just to get a piece a dat? Oh, and somehow (also not explained) a freaking airplane manages to get inside of this cave. If you want to waste an hour and 20 some odd minutes of your life, go watch a Godzilla film. Yes they're cheesy as heck, but at least they're endearing and re- watchable. Problems: Camera - Shaky cams have been done well before (Blair Witch, Cloverfield) and they've been done poorly (Monster) but throw in almost complete darkness and the almost dizzying camera becomes a confusing pain in the bum. Throw in the sequences of "shiz mah batteriez r dead" and everyone's batteries are out at the same time and you get squelchy invisible deaths (that ironically enough, one of them looks exactly the same as another shaky-cam movie, REC.) Story - None. The "backstory" is just confusing, and comes up at awkward times. The movie plot itself is this formula; Run -> Stop -> Freak -> Someone yells "calm down!" -> Batteries die -> person dies -> repeat. for the whole. movie.Positives: scenes? Belay that. Neither one made any dang sense.I'm going to go off somewhere and try to pretend I didn't just watch this p.o.s

Contains Spoilers Probably the worst movie i have seen this year. Firstly why the cave did not collapse from the bloody screaming (which BTW is nearly the whole script) i don't know, secondly i was laughing when i thought that it may have been Man-Bear-Pig but was horribly let down, the camera angles are awful i think they were added just to take your mind off the fact they are running around in a f***ing cave the whole time. I am really disappointed did expect much but when something wins Fans Choice at shriek fest i was expecting more. so pretty much do not watch this film unless ur into the whole I'm lost, oh no we are running around in circles, oh no Man-Bear-Pig!! oh wait its just a caveman, kinda thing.

I am very disappointed with this movie and I'll tell ya why.Right until the last ten minutes or so, we are treated to a painfully obvious setup of "team go into dangerous situation and face monster," replete with the lame little "personal past dealing" among some of the generic characters. To the writer's credit, while Hollywood dishes out tons of crap like this and makes every character an idiot wisecrack, this film actually attempted to be serious.Secondly, the acting wasn't particularly good, Mustafa Shakir being the weakest of all, though the women did do a good job of acting terrified -- that is, until it became annoying. But that is not why I am disappointed! Oh, no.You see... I was perfectly content to accept the film for what it was and enjoy it just the same. After all, it's not like it was not entertaining. Not to mention bloody. Oh, boy, do you see lots of blood. It's gratuitous but unsensationalized, which just makes it so... morbid. Great move. The only exception is one over the top close up on a dismembered body (I think the director had a Fulci moment, there), other than that the gore was used perfectly. And then we come to the disappointment.WHY did the director decide to throw a twist in this film's last ten minutes which took it from the status of run-of-the-mill "group of people getting picked off" fare to something truly and deeply disturbing -- then END it? Folks, I don't want to give away spoilers, but the plight of the surviving characters is just horrific. The more you think about it, the more you get that piercing feeling in your stomach. It's just... boy, what can I even tell ya.If only the writer (and director) could have created that SAME sense of darkness, that spiritual bleakness, that bloody unrelenting sense of helplessness... through the ENTIRE film, this could have been a great one. A truly great one.Instead, it's a generic b-movie with a typical situational plot which shows a brief spark of brilliance at the very end, then reverts to its bland state. What a crime. For the record, it's worth watching still.
