Pretty Good

one of my absolute favorites!

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.

A horror quickie w/a half way decent cast (Ryan Phillipe, Sherilyn Fenn) are wasted in this obvious effort. Joey King plays a struggling high schooler who finds a Chinese wish box that grants her 7 wishes w/differing degrees of success & regret as outcomes. The plot is pretty much on auto pilot where you know what's coming from several miles away. The only good thing is we get a dose of Barb from Stranger Things (Shannon Purser) but even that is a slight respite for this eye rolling misfire.

WISH UPON is yet another high school horror flick with an entirely predictable storyline that you'll have seen play out a million times before in a million similar ways. A typical mildly obnoxious protagonist - who has no likeable element to her personality whatsoever - comes into possession of an ancient magical device which will grant her seven wishes. They do come true, but with macabre results. This is the kind of teen friendly fare that I generally dislike watching, with cheesy death scenes that feel like weak imitations of the ones in the FINAL DESTINATION franchise and a general generic and predictable feel. I was amused to see Ryan Philippe looking middle aged and playing the protagonist's father.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The acting was good, story was entertaining, kept me engaged throughout. Not like most modern jump scare horrors, more of a story based movie.

Viewer be warned, this is not a parody movie. Even half way through the movie there were so many hilariously stupid, cringeworthy and cliche moments that I thought it might be a parody, but unfortunately it is not. I highly recommend this to anybody who has seen more than one horror movie in their life and has even the slightest eye for bullshit, as it is often hysterical just how stupid it manages to be. Don't trust a single positive review for this movie, but if you enjoy so-bad-it's-good movies then by all means watch it.
