It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

I have this memory of talking about this movie in Chemistry class my sophomore year of high school. "Look, choreography by Paula Abdul!" This was the big, the only selling point of this movie, which played in theatres for one show a week for five days or so and then disappeared forever, like all those other presumably godawful dance movies that followed DIRTY DANCING like horses in a parade. Oh god, those Lambada movies, and SALSA, and the fact that 1989-91 was a really, really bad time for music and movies and especially music movies. Really. I mean, really: "I Wanna Sex You Up"? So, nobody's seen this movie so nobody's gonna read these comments so why not reminisce about all these b-movies that passed through local bookings before languishing in oblivion? There was GOOD TO GO and DOWN TWISTED and, oh yeah, remember THE PRINCESS ACADEMY and APPRENTICE TO MURDER and CHOKE CANYON and SKY BANDITS and THE DRIFTER? Anyone?Oh well, isn't this more interesting than some staid assessment of an '80s movie called DANCE TO WIN? Better this than nothing, right? Unless you arrived here by way of "American Idol," in which case I may sound like a raving loony. Do you Paula Abdul fans remember her remix CD, "Dance, Ya Know It"? I used to blast that in my backyard while clearing crabapples, way before Skat Kat and Rush Rush Keanu. Straight up now tell me.
