n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.

Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

Another day, another teen horror – but at least this one's not as awful as some of the lunk-headed junk that's been greenlit as of late (THE FOG remake, anyone? I thought not). VENOM is an exceedingly predictable story involving a man who's possessed by a number of evil souls which proceed to make him wreak havoc amongst a group of good-natured teenagers. Yep, it's another lame excuse for yet another slasher movie, one that even manages to shy away from the gore scenes despite an 'R' rating. So why DIDN'T I hate this film as much as some others? The setting, for one; I think Louisiana is criminally underused in the cinema, as it always makes for a great, Gothic backdrop. Of course, there's the voodoo mumbo-jumbo stuff thrown into the brew here, which is another predictable cliché, but I can live with that. Another reason this film isn't bad is that it gets down to business right away, with only the minimum of moronic teen talk before the plot hits home. What follows is a pared-down thriller as a dwindling number of teenagers use anything in their path – including trucks, fire, black magic, you name it – to try and stop the unstoppable killer. The casting hurts this, because there's nobody of note here – other than Agnes Bruckner, who followed up her performance in this with one in THE WOODS, another supernatural horror co-starring (yay!) Bruce Campbell. Bruckner's filmed to look good in a figure-hugging tight top, so at least she gives the viewer something to look at. As for the killer, he's a bit of a disappointment – a chain-wielding zombie type who's almost a cross between Freddy Krueger and Ghost Rider! There are a (few) well handled scare sequences with this rampaging ghost-possessed killer, largely towards the end, and the pay-off actually works for once. I could have done without the clumsy CGI snakes and the silly final shot, but for the most part, VENOM is par for the course for modern-day horror: not particularly good, not particularly bad, but mildly entertaining nonetheless.

Why make this movie? There are literally thousands, THOUSANDS, of movie just like this one. Is this movie's purpose to be utterly the same as thousands of other movies? If sameness is the purpose, why? If making a movie that's exactly the same as thousands of other movies is the goal, what is so wrong about making the movie original? Are the film makers worried that if the movie were unique no would go see it? How is there any drama or tension when every moment of the movie is clichéd and predictable. Every character who dies dies when they are predictably supposed to- each death occurs predictably how it is supposed to- what is the appeal?

Venom tells the tale of Ray Sawyer. A lonely man in a sleepy town who everyone whispers about yet no one really knows where that jagged scar down his face came from. Nothing really happens in Rays life, nothing really happens in this small Louisiana town until one night while driving home Ray rescues an old Creole lady from her car that dangles precariously from a bridge. While in the car Ray is suddenly attacked by a suitcase full of venomous snakes which are rumoured to contain the evil souls of the criminally insane. As the car crashes into the river below so does poor Ray and his kind act is rewarded with a car full of snakes striking him with deadly painful bites in his last few moments of life. The following night Rays body disappears from the morgue and what follows is 24 hours of pure terror as this small town is held hostage to an unstoppable Ray Sawyer back from the dead and possessed by the evil spirits of the insane intent on claiming more souls from this towns locals. This is a supernatural slasher with a high body count and a twist. You can spot the trademarks of Producer/Screen-Writer Kevin Williamson ("Scream", "Dawsons Creek", "I know what you did last summer", "The Faculty", "Cursed") everywhere in this very enjoyable movie. From the dialogue savvy Teens to the tension filled chase scenes and the genuinely creepy killer that is Ray Sawyer, who nick-named "Mr. Jangles" because he collects the keys of his victims, could be the new Jason Voorhees/Michael Myers. Murderous highlights include a graphic throat slashing with a wrench, a death by sand blaster, a character ripped in two while caught between driving cars and a memorable nerve-racking chase scene through the eerie swamps of the bayou. Forget the negative reviews, leave your brain at the door and enjoy this superior atmospheric throw-back to the slasher genre.

Venom wasn't the greatest thing ever, but it's something that I would sit through again and againYou're not gonna find any Oscar-worthy acting here, but it's not putrid like the acting in the Black Christmas remake. Some of the kills were very inventive, and I liked the idea of this lonely, harmless man turning into a serial killer who is no Freddy or Jason or Hannibal, but he is smarter than some of the other brain-dead serial killers that appear in slasher films these days. Overall, if you are looking for an Oscar movie with this, than turn elsewhere, but if you are looking for a good slasher film for a Saturday night, than I would say rent this. It's something that you could buy if it's in the bargain bin.Rating: 6/10
