The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

worthy of mythological status. Vampire hunter D is orgasmic in its' display of visual animated vampire slaying over the top fighting plus witchcraft eye candy- seeing this under the influence of heavy mind altering substances could wind up being downright spiritual since this is so intensely well depicted and intensely graphic.Vampire hunter D is our quiet talking wildly slaughtering Vampire Bounty Hunter- but he as a Dampire - a half vampire - so he is the lonely anti-hero warrior persona ever so popular in anime films- with a flash of his sword he can leave scores of men shooting blood from their lopped off appendages.D, as he is called runs into some competition in trying to track down the girl that it is his job to return to her family at all costs- this creates competition, tension and a romantic moment or two as well- very rich characters, lots of intense, superb witchcraft animations of ancient spells and such- this movie is a work of art!!-One funny thing- if you can read German- is to read the note the vampire reads in the carriage- and compare it to the speech of the English dub voice-over.

I have seen both Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and I must say that Bloodlust is a must see and must have. Unfortunately the first movie is the worst anime I have ever seen. The sound is awful even on DVD. The animation is really weak, the voice acting sucks big time, and the lines are totally uninspired. The characters are drawn really badly - all the women have big heads, like they are geniuses or something and look very "manly". There is absolutely nothing that I liked in this anime. The thing that I hate most was the annoying laughter of the characters. They were saying something stupid and then they always laughed. It was very annoying. If you want to see nice anime go for Bloodlust, not this one.

This was one of the first Asian animation films I ever saw and really caugth my attention at the time and as such remains one of my personal favourites despite a few faults. Not as epic as the likes of Akira, Vampire Hunter D is none the less a fine piece of animation with an interesting post-apocalyptic setting that takes it's cues from Dracula, Frankenstein etc rather than the cyberpunk of William Gibson et al. 'D' is a very interesting character and an easy comparison is a character such as Blade. Dark brooding and with plenty of past history D wanders the country fighting for good against a tide of evil including vampires and werewolves. There's plenty of action and blood although the plot loses its way at times it remains good fun throughout. As with most anime the English voice characterisations are not the best at times and probably original language with subtitles is the best bet.Vampire killing fun 7/10

Whether or not you'll enjoy a movie like this mostly depends on whether or not you're an anime fan. Personally I enjoy most anime -- obviously "Akira" is a fantastic movie, and Hayao Miyazaki has recently enjoyed massive success with his anime masterpieces "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away". Some people are put off by the weird creatures and the sometimes bad quality of the animation. Also, dubbing is never a good idea and most people are unwilling to deal with subtitles. But if you are an anime fan, I definitely recommend checking this movie out. It's pretty much your standard post-apocalyptic, supernatural battle-to-the-death, with great characters and an interesting storyline. Vampire Hunter D is a very tough, emotionally-scarred vampire hunter who is basically a good guy but in some ways a bit of anti-hero (which is always nice). Oh, and he has a talking hand.Vampire Hunter D is hired by a young girl to track down a vampire who has bitten her and destroy him. He has to fight a seemingly impossible battle to kill this powerful vampire, and there are plenty of great visual ideas along the way. It's the kind of thing that could possibly become a very entertaining, CGI-heavy Hollywood re-make someday, and the odds of that happening become increasingly likely as time goes on. All in all, this is a perfectly decent anime -- not the best I've seen, but fans of that genre will definitely find something to enjoy here.
