It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

Talking to a family friend over the weekend about the upcoming Oscars,I got told about a film which featured Oscar nom (now winner) Eddie Redmayne teaming up with Kristen Stewart, which led to me getting hold of a yellow handkerchief. The plot:Released from jail after serving 6 years, Brett Hanson heads to a local shop to get a drink. As he drinks,Hanson hears teenagers Martine & Gordy chatting.Running into them later on,Hanson if offered a lift to the next town.Originally planning to travel to the town as a loner,Hanson soon finds Martine & Gordy's journey to be something that inspires Hanson to correct his past mistakes.View on the film:Keeping Hanson,Gordy & Martina constantly moving, director Udayan Prasad and cinematographer Chris Menges dust the title in an intimate Mumblecore atmosphere, with Prasad and Menges subtly using yellow to show everyone on a desert road, whilst also cleverly making blue be Hanson's colour to the his freedom at the deep blue sea. Transferring Yôji Yamada's 1977 The Yellow Handkerchief's to the US south in their adaptation of Pete Hamill's novel, the screenplay by Erin Dignam gives the title dollops of southern sass, thanks to Dignam giving Gordy,Martine and Hanson a real warmth, which shines as they reveal the scars of their past.Revealing Hanson's past with a skillful use of flashback,Dignam refreshingly makes no apologies for Hanson's past mistakes, but instead shows him trying to make sense and learn from them.Putting on a pretty good fake US accent, Eddie Redmayne gives a very good, sincere performance as Gordy, with Redmayne showing Gordy's nervousness to burn away,as sparks begin to fly between Redmayne's Gordy & a delightful Kristen Stewart's Martine.Spending a few days in jail in order to get a feel for the role,William Hurt gives a brilliant performance as Hanson, thanks to Hurt showing a real weight on Hanson's shoulders as he tries to make sense of his dark past, whilst also showing a growing sign of optimism,as Gordy,Martine & Hanson chase the yellow handkerchief.

Intriguing, often very suspenseful and mysterious, the story keeps us wondering and waiting for answers all the way through. The themes are loneliness and rejection/ fear of rejection. Although I missed the significance of the foreshadowing right in the beginning when the main character showed grace and civility towards both his guards and fellow inmates as he was released from prison, in retrospect it was a well written screenplay. The acting by all characters was excellent. It was believable because of the extremely good character portrayal, the realistic settings in post-Katrina New Orleans area and cinematography that didn't try to sugar coat anything. I'd never seen it before (2014) but it is now on my top ten list. For once I could watch a movie without thinking "I'm going to have to shut this off". The story has a lot of power to make one think deeply and in the end we're left with resolutions but also with room to imagine our own continuation. Thank-you to it's creators, especially the cast!

Great Love story, I like it when you Americans put a bunch of characters on a road trip. Classic!. This film takes you beyond the bitter part of life back into the sweet. The music just blend in, the camera capture is somewhat 'spiritual'. Simple movie, brought tears to my spirit's eyes. This one truly touches the heart. One great movie making!. Salute. The cast is perfect in their place. People may shine only in a moment in their life. And that moment will shine forever in whosoever is touched by it. I almost give up on Hollywood, but this shows, you still can do it right!Salute ^ ^

I believe that the movie was well directed, well acted, and an enjoyable treat. Eddie Redmayne's character is not your stereotypical teenage boy, but complicated and misunderstood instead. The actor is enjoyable to watch and even portrays the character with every slight movement of his body. William Hurt is amazing as well. It seems that he is just another man on the road with two kids, but he later unravels to be someone else, a husband and ex-prisoner. The actor contains is almost like your flower. It starts out as a plain seed and it blooms or something extraordinary. Although Maria Bello is not present for most of the film, she is able to make her character a symbol, an object that is bigger. My only complaints are the use of flashbacks and Kristen Stewart's performance. The flashbacks were amazing, but they were sort of confusing by the way they are used. Stewart's character, Martine, brought light and innocence, but the character instead was left dull. However, she is able to make most of the darker moments. Nonetheless, it is a must see and an amazing film to watch.
