The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Every rainy day in elementary school we were subjected to this horror show of a movie. A boy is stalked around Paris by a sentient red balloon. Stupidly, the boy befriends this balloon instead of running away in terror from this unholy object. Even though I was already reading Stephen King and grew up watching horror movies, none of that scared me as much as this terrifying tale of a stalker balloon. The ending is by far the worse when the boy is abducted by all the balloons of Paris and it ends with him flying high in the sky. Leaving one wondering what will happen next. Will a flock of birds fly into the balloons popping them? Or will the balloons abandon the boy and leave him to end up impaled upon the Eiffel Tower? I don't know how anyone can possibly find this movie artistic or charming. It's terrifying and to this day I really, REALLY hate balloons.

I saw this movie in a list of movies you must see before you die. I wouldn't rate it as highly as that, but I would say it's a lovely movie. The adorable story is about a young boy who finds a red balloon. The movie starts out in a straightforward manner and increases the fantasy elements by degrees. Th cinematography is utterly gorgeous. The opening scene is striking, a scene of the boy running with his balloon is exhilarating, and throughout there is a lovely sense of place. The score is horrible, a maudlin, cloying thing that is pretty typical of the sort of music composers felt was appropriate for cute movies about kids in this time period. I actually think someone should re-score the film, but in spite of that it really is a low-key pleasure.

How have I gone my entire life without even hearing about The Red Balloon? Thanks to Entertainment Weekly's "55 Essential Movies Your Child Must See (Before they turn 13)" List, I found this movie on Netflix & watched it with my kiddos. I thought it was beautiful & the kids liked it too, even if my 7 year old pointed out "that kid's clothes are funny". It was short & (bitter)sweet. I especially loved the timelessness of it, kids (at least mine) are still mesmerized by balloons today, it's neat that over 50 years later, some things never change. Happy to say this was the first foreign film we watched together, and it won't be the last.

I know a lot of people loved this movie but as a kid I didn't. It seemed boring and dreary. The lack of dialog and the spare gray streets made the movie seems desolate. The balloon looked weird not like any balloon I knew as a kid. The bullying seemed cruel and unmotivated. A balloon seemed like a pathetic friend that was neither very fun. The death of the red balloon was genuinely sad. The supposed liberating resolution did not make up for it. In fact it was scary and left me wondering if the boy fell to his death, was suspended in the sky forever or was taken some place far away with no way to take care of himself. I also felt sad for all the kids that were deprived of their balloons when they all flew to the boy. It seemed unfair.
