It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.

There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.

Don't even know how to describe this stupid film, because I simply can't comprehend what's the real purpose of making it.What we got here are two stupid young men who thought they are the pioneers to travel the south and north American by riding an old, totally unreliable motorcycle to broaden their views of their future. One of them is even a poor con artist, trying so hard to bullshit all the way. The other one is just like romantic fool, a peacock with a more decent character, even thought of bringing a puppy for his love one. Both of them are terrible bikers, they crashed their miserable motorcycle so many times, even crashed into muddy trenches, gutters or creeks with deep water. They don't seem to have any mechanical knowledge of a motorbike, yet every time they seem to have no problem to fix a badly crashed one. They don't even know when to slow down on dirt turns of the country roads. And I don't know how they could and would broaden their lives' prospect since all they could do is just concentrating to stupidly maintain inappropriate speed, trying to reach some unknown places with food and lodging. The road trip never educated them a bit. They are still who they are from the beginning before they start the journey. I simply couldn't buy anything from this pathetic film, trying to tell us that it's the trip that has formed a great revolutionist in the making. That's total bullshit! I would never believe anything what this film targeted to us: A long road trip on a junk motorbike could make you different, especially when these two morons don't even know where and how to set up a tent during a stormy evening.

Motorcycle Diaries (2004): Dir: Walter Salles / Cast: Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo de la Serna, Mercedes Moran, Jean Pierre Noher, Facundo Espinosa: Engaging and often funny documentary about adventure and companionship. It regards two energetic males who set out on their motorcycle in hopes of encountering adventure and are overcome by one setback after another. The bike takes its share of abuse before finally dying down but they continue their quest via other resources until they eventually come across a leper colony. Using their medical knowledge they bring hope to those they encounter as well as a sense of purpose within themselves. Director Walter Salles previously made Central Station and he makes great use of locations and weather conditions. He also lends to the film a great documentary style in its presentation, which heightens the themes. Gael Garcia Bernal plays the young yet serious doctor who himself must take medicine for a condition. Rodrigo de la Serna is hilarious as his womanizing buddy. While they are terrific together, the supporting roles could have been broader. They are observed only through the leads and lack further detail. This unfortunately deducts the film from what it might have been had further personalities been established otherwise themes demonstrate persistence and endurance of those having courage to move forward. Score: 9 / 10

This is much more than the standard road movie you may mistake it for.Despite the money issues, job worries and political unrest of the era, it is a picture-perfect-postcard showcase of Latin America in the 1950s.It is also a fascinating portrait of a middle class, idealistic young-man, at the beginning of his journey from adolescence to revolutionary. In short, this is a film that truly inspires.Divorced Dads Cinema Club Rating 90% – Important, quietly brilliant and essential viewing

This film really is outstanding! I love the music (Gustavo Santaoalla) If you love all things South American, Hispanic and love travelling you will love this film. Having spent a lot of time working in Chile and Argentina, this film really evoked lots of memories for me and although set in 1952, some things have barely changed down in Tierra del Fuego and other parts of Patagonia. Moving on up through the continent, the two encounter interesting people and get into some terrible scrapes. What would Ernesto's mother have thought!!! I suppose he was the good boy and throughout the film, we wonder if he will spend those dollars ......
