I haven't seen this film for a couple of years and then popped it into the DVD the other night. Loved it from start to finish. The great thing about this movie is the ensemble cast. What a great bunch of characters - all of them. The story is hilarious and gets funnier as things go on. The writing is superb ... seriously... "Phd"... "Like Elmer"" "Phd --- Fudd." As always, Tom Hanks is great,, one of the best. The cast of characters that surrounds him couldn't be better. It's hilarious story and the character created by Irma P. Hall, is fantastic. A real well done performance. One of my all time favorite movies. Great directing and great story. Well done. Keeps me laughing.

Something must be wrong with me, I enjoyed the Coens' remake of "Ladykillers" much more than… nah, not the original "Ladykillers" but the other Coens' remake: "True Grit". But unlike "True Grit", I hadn't seen the original "Ladykillers" with Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, so virtually; I didn't experience it as a remake. This is where it gets tricky, in the 2004 "Ladykillers"' board, I told a user that no film should suffer by comparison but should be judged on the basis of its ambitions and the degree of their achievements. Not every movie has pretensions to be a masterpiece (although we tend to set our expectations high with the Coens). But then again, in my review of "True Grit" (2010) I made many comparisons with the John Wayne version. So I think I'll do something I never did before. I just rented the original "Ladykillers" so I'm going to write a review of the remake before AND after watching the original. Here we go:BEFORE WATCHING THE ORIGINALI just can't resist a good, old, screwball Coens' comedy. If there's anything "Ladykillers" proves is that the siblings can still generate as many laughs as the Farrelly brothers or Judd Apatow without forcing. This film is a laugh riot, with one of the craziest ensemble cast ever, even by Coens' standards. It starts with a suave and literate Southern professor played by Tom Hanks, with a devilish smile and manipulative eloquence. And he's the ringmaster of a criminal circus composed of a by-the- book ranger with the ungrateful name of Garth Pancake, played by J.K. Simmons. Tzi Ma aka "The General", a Japanese chain-smoker with a toothbrush you don't know if it imitates the funny or the evil guy, Ryan Hurst as Lump, a football player whose strength is inversely proportional to his IQ, and it's saying a lot, and finally Marlon Wayans as MacSam, a pot-smoking loony, who seems to have been directly dropped from "Scary Movie", which makes his presence in the film as hilarious as incongruous. The film is exactly what I wished Woody Allen's "Small Time Crooks" would be, there's something just so funny in the mix between caper films and comedies that I'm glad for once, there was no time wasted for a joke, it is funny from beginning to end. And even the old lady, played by Irma P. Hall, steals the show, she whose basement is used as a decoy is an old woman who border on caricature (but who doesn't?) as the typical Southern lady who can't tolerate cursing in a good Christian house (which makes the more presence of Wayans in this location even funnier). The lady venerates her husband who died twenty years before and I just love how the expression in his painting changes all through the film, the dead husband is the unsung hero of the film. And the parallel between Edgar Allen Poe's "Raven" induces by his portrait, allows some moment of depth to sneak here and there, but this is a film primarily conceived for laughs. And the painting isn't just the only running gag, I loved the bit with the crazy instruments they played in the basement, the way, no matter what they're doing, they manage to keep on pretending they were playing and no matter what happens, an explosion or money flying over the ceiling, the brain of the operation manages to find the right words to convince the lady to forget about it, and The General to keep his cigarette in his mouth… all lit.The third act is the real revelation of the film as it always find a creative way to get rid of each villain, and I just love how random, there's this garbage boat coming under the bridge coming at the right time. This is obviously a movie meant as a harmless, mindless and tasteless comedy but it works nonetheless. Now, I'm going to watch the original and complete this review.AFTER WATCHING THE ORIGINALWhat's the big deal with all these comparisons? I loved the remake even better because the Coens actually found a clever way to adapt the story. They accentuated the contrast between the criminals and say what you want, the old-school criminals from McKendrick's film were colorful enough but as much as I loved Alec Guinness and can see the edge over Tom Hanks, could anyone by funnier than J.K. Simmons and Marlon Wayans (especially when put together). Can you think of something funnier than a bowel disorder as the "human element" that might undermine the whole plan? Maybe I'm biased because I have this problem every morning so I can relate to it. And the film not only exploits this gag but also exploits it to the core in the most shameless way. Pancake doesn't just go to the toilet but he explains the problem to Wayans and how he meets his girlfriend in a convention. And the final pay-off to that whole nonsense is perfectly timed with the moment the film gets darker. Now, that I saw the two films, I have different feelings regarding "True Grit", it seems as if the Coens didn't get the reception they expect from "Ladykillers" and thought the next remake should try to "transcend" the original. Their "True Grit" was one of the few Coens films that have nothing of their usual sparkle, and I enjoyed it like a legitimate Western but that was all. I had fun watching "Ladykillers", and I'd think of putting it among the funniest Coens brothers film, not even on a guilty level, I had a lot of fun watching this film, and contradicting my opening statement, I wonder if I didn't enjoy this slightly better than the original. As the Professor would say; "Mea Culpa".

The Coen's attempt to recover from the disaster that was Intolerable Cruelty by jabbing at the 1955 black comedy by Alexander Mackendrick resulted in what I believe to be their worst movie.Tom Hanks plays a charming Southern professor who rents a room from landlady Marva Munson, (Irma P. Hall) who isn't aware of him and his crew's plan to rob a casino underground right under her nose. But they aren't quite aware of just how observant she is.This film is so awkward, which I understand was a main intention, but awkward in an annoying way. Casting Tom Hanks, Tzi Ma, and JK Simmons is one thing, but casting Marlon Wayans in an adaptation of this classic? Cmon! Not even the good actors can save it. J.K. Simmons is completely suppressed and annoying, Tzi Ma just says nothing and eats cigarettes all day, and Tom Hanks in his possible worst performance ever snickers and snorts like a pig five different times, as if it's supposed to be an interesting trait of his.The tone is very off putting. It's a goofy light comedy with cheesy, fake characters, while at the same time having people getting blown up and hung. It's all over the place. Erma Hall as the landlady is very entertaining in her scenes and very commanding in her role, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Unfortunately, we don't get much of her. Instead we get forced humor with repetitive gags. To be fair, I wasn't expecting this to be good, but I wasn't expecting to hate it this much. The moment Marlon Wayans robs a store and gets lifted up by his nostrils, I just wanted to cry. The scene where J.K. Simmons blows himself up while testing an explosive on the wall was actually a pretty fun scene to see the house shake from the outside, until we see he loses nothing but a finger in that huge explosion. I know it's a comedy, but in a film like this, suspension of disbelief doesn't apply.Overall, this film is atrocious, not just for a Coen's film, just in general. I'm glad this is as bad as it gets for them because if it got worse, then I'd question their motives.
