If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

I feel so lucky because I was given the chance to find and watch this movie right before it was deleted from Netflix. The poster was actually a turndown for me until something encouraged me to check this movie out on IMDb. It has a good rating. So I decided to download and watch this movie. And WOW! Suddenly I fell in love with this movie. It was a simple yet very entertaining and informative movie. It was filmed like a documentary, btw. It didn't provide you with so many great cinematography or screen quality since it's an 80's movie but the story and comedy was really great. It was so amusing. I think it's a universal comedy because I'm quite sure all people from every country, with different kind of ages will have a lot of laugh while watching this movie. I hope someday I'm gonna have a chance to watch this movie again. It deserve a rewatch from me.

THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY is a South African movie, filmed in Botswana, charting the misadventures of a scientist and a bushman as they are forced to team up to fight the fight against some evil revolutionary types. The film is notable for featuring a naturalistic performance from N!xau, who is the real deal and who appeared in a further four movies after his new-found fame here. This is a slapstick comedy for the most part and for the most part it works very well. It is slapdash and unfocused in places, but in terms of location authenticity you can't get much better than this. N!xau only has a supporting role but he possesses a kind of natural charisma so you can see why he won the acclaim, even though he speaks in his unsubtitled language throughout. Most of the comedy comes from the shenanigans of Marius Weyers, playing the scientist type. A lot of the humour is dumb and lowbrow, but it's also very funny, like the bit in the schoolroom or all the scenes involving the long-suffering jeep. The action set-piece climax is very well achieved and rounds off what is a completely unique and inventive production. I look forward to seeing the sequel.

I've seen this movie three times since it was first available in the US. The first time was when I was in my late teens; then, again in my twenties; and, now, at 49...and, it's funny every time! This movie isn't racist as so many people seem to believe! It makes fun of EVERYONE...especially the star with his Land Rover and socially-odd behavior around a beautiful woman. In fact, it makes the 'civilized' world fantasize about living 'simple' like the Bushmen in a seemingly-harmonious group without leaders; rules; misbehavior; crime; punishment; and, all the things that any 'civilized' society would be that-much-better without, if such a thing were possible. Who are really the 'civilized' people in this movie? Who are really the 'happy' people in this movie? Does anyone believe that a happy person living in the wilderness on his/her own terms really cares about what an unhappy person living in 'civilization' thinks about him/her? I believe that a person who sees racism everywhere they go and in everything they see is the 'real' racist.Another reason why I like this movie so much isn't even because it's a comedy...it's because of the wonderful scenery and wildlife of the Kalahari Desert. To me, this movie is much like a comedy version of the 1962 John Wayne movie "Hatari" which was made further north-east in Tanganyika (what is now Tanzania). Also...during the gun-fight with the two terrorists/rebels, the ricochets of the bullets sometimes make the 'same sound' as they do in Sergio Leone's spaghetti-westerns which I found somewhat funny, but, 'cool' at the same time. Being set in South Africa, I found this 'classic-comedy' very-much heartwarming as opposed to other great movies made in Africa; such as "Zulu(1964);" "Zulu Dawn(1979);" "Blood Diamond(2006);" "The Wilby Conspiracy(1975);" and, others...'ALL' great movies...but, not funny! With all of this said...this is a marvelous movie that pokes fun at anyone and everyone in it, even the animals (like the rhinoceros that puts out fires!?!?)...and, that's the way it should be. It's silly, stupid, and, exaggerated, but, those are the ingredients of a great comedy! If you can't laugh at yourself, then, 'you' just might be the one with the issues!?!?

My wife introduced me to this movie. What a movie, I can watch it time and again. It is a truly great movie that grossed around $30,000,000.00. Jamie Uys paid N!xau a few hundred dollars for his role that made this movie. N!xau did get better pay in the sequels, but died of multiple-drug-resistant tuberculosis. I guess he was not a SAG member. Truly a disgrace this man was not treated better. To make several successful movies and not get medical care? With all the causes Hollywood pushes with their star power I do not understand why this man was left in the conditions he lived. I know he was happy, as money had little meaning for him, but at lease get his people medical care.
