... View MoreThe Fighting Temptations was mean-spirited and way too shallow for my liking. In a way I suppose it does expose the religious hypocrisy that goes on a lot now a days, but the way it was done was cruel and mean- spirited. Many of the characters are hard to root for, and while Cuba Gooding does his best with the material, his character is very hard to relate too. I think the producers of this movie expected a big hit, because they brought in Beyonce and figured it would be the revival Cuba needed, but there is too much wrong with it too work. The music itself was quite impressive at times, Beyonce can really do no wrong with her voice, and I especially enjoyed the guys from the jail who were doing the creative rapping, but I feel this should have been light-hearted fun, and in the end it took itself much too seriously a lot of the time. Cuba's charisma serves him well in this movie, but not well enough to make this anything more than mediocre, and it's a shame too because it had all the potential in the world to be a great musical.Performances. Cuba Gooding Jr's charisma makes him better than he has any right to be here, but his character does many things I didn't like. Beyoncé Knowles is gorgeous to look at, but her character is rather shallow and she had her wooden moments, while her chemistry with Cuba felt off. Golden Girl fans may recognize Rue McClanahan has a small role here, she's pretty much wasted. Wendell Pierce had a nice comic touch as the Reverend, I enjoyed his performance. LaTanya Richardson plays one of the most unlikable and despicable religious woman I've ever seen in my lifetime, she did her job well.Bottom line. It has its moments, but not enough to make it a quality flick. It's really mediocre when it all comes down to it, and I really can't recommend this than anything more than if nothing else is on the T.V.4/10
... View MoreNot one of his absolute best but a nice one. I would have to say that the church plays a great part of black culture and this is more of a movie with Christian themes as opposed to a Christian movie. WIth that said, this is a nice movie and while I think the 'bootyologist' scene was a bit much, it is in fact a bit Seinfeldian but it is a convo I think that is tailored for blacks. I would also say that this is a movie that is with a tradition of going to the hometown in order to recover a bit of yourself you lost in the city and a lost love you always wanted as in the case of Darrin and Lily who wanted to marry Michael Jackson but ended up with Darrin at the end was a pretty nice tie in. This is not a preachy movie while keeping up some Christian themes and the soundtrack is amazing as well. I would recommend it to anyone who like Gospel as well as a cute film, I would be a little hesitant to say it's a chick flick, but it would be considered one though it is from a man's point of view.
... View Moreas with so many other peoples comments the sound track is potentially the best thing however, i will always remember that when me and my mates went to the cinema to the cinema to see Beyonce (i mean the movie!!!) and we sat towards the back + there was also sat in close proximity the local 'bad boys' who had decided that they would talk + ring each others phones throughout the movie. this continued until Cuba Gooding Jnr appeared on screen, within a couple of minutes there was silence from the group, full credit to CGJ as i feel he holds a very average film together sister act meets the tina turner life story - good if there is nothing else worth watching on a lazy Sunday afternoon
... View MoreI'm not going to go into a lengthy critique. Suffice it to say, the plot 'borrows' way too much from Sister Act and Sister Act 2 (yes, both of them). With the exception of the romance between Cuba and Beyonce's characters - which by the way, has no chemistry at all) Yes, the musical numbers are nice, but the scenes where the choir is rehearsing with new members for the first time seem a little too choreographed to me. However, if you love gospel music and light, fluffy non-complicated plots, you will love this. It just didn't "sing" to me... Regardless, I love Cuba - particularly in comedies, but why oh why this one? Cuba! Show me da talent!
