Very well executed
... View MoreIt was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
... View MoreThis is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
... View MoreThe movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
... View MoreThe Conspirator is a film that I would call mediocre at best. There was nothing truly captivating about the film or the performances. There are very few scenes where I'm actually pulled into the world of the movie. James McAvoy doesn't give a convincing performance as Frederick. He seems to be acting as himself rather than this war veteran. The only performance that could save this movie was Robin Wright as Mary Surratt. She conveys this motherly character very naturally making the audience believe in this woman and her cause. The costume and set design were well done, but don't blow you away. The editing is seamless even though it is very simple. My highest compliments go out to the production designer for keeping with a common motif of dullness in the clothing and set throughout the movie. This movie doesn't feature Lincoln as most other civil war era movies do. Besides a short scene at the beginning he is barely mentioned. The war is also only glanced over during an opening sequence to introduce Fred. This is a similar approach that was also taken by other Lincoln movies such as Lincoln directed by Steven Spielberg. This showcase of the war gives the audience a time frame, but nothing else. This movie fills a Hollywood cliché of being an over the top drama that happened to be based on a true story. Even though the story is riveting, the needless drama is distracting from the true plot. I believe that if it was told more realistically this movie would have been a hit.
... View MoreHaving visited historical sites like Lincoln Memorial and Ford's Theater, "The Conspirator" was a history lesson in itself. Previously, i had known very little outside of the fact when President Lincoln was shot and who shot him(John Wilkes Booth). Many parts of the movie hit home and drew my interest right from the start as i was eager to know what happened post assassination. The setting is set from the onset of the film through the busy streets of Washington D.C. It remains set there while the story of the trial of conspirators is investigated and told. Allowing viewers to get an idea of how Washington D.C looked in the Civil War Era. By the end of the movie,I realized it was much more than just the passing of President Lincoln. Also, I began to feel superior in my knowledge of the political aspects of justice, injustice, and most importantly revenge. The plot was elaborate and many were involved. The lime light focuses on the accusation of the involvement by Mary Suratte in the plan to kill Lincoln. The director (Robert Redford) and producers did an excellent job in portraying geographic filming location while also maintaining factual validity. Although the movie is strongly about finding justice for the Lincoln assassination, the film does not fail to address events that occurred with the attempted assassinations on the lives of Secretary of State WIlliam S. Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson. The roles and excellent performance of actors such as James McAvoy, Robin Wright, and Tom Wilkinson helped support the film plot of events occurring 150 years ago. This can be attributed to the masterful casting by Executive producers and director Robert Redford. Although the court understood someone had to pay, I took comfort in knowing the importance producers took in mentioning but also challenging the morality of the constitutional rights we were, and still are guaranteed tracing back to the Civil War Era. Personally, This is a great informational movie for people of all ages. Immense political action, and important plot twists left me intrigued throughout the movie. Instant classic, regardless of how unsuccessful the "The Conspirator" was in the box office.
... View MoreHistorically accurate except for minor details. The acting was great and the scenery and costumes suited the time period very well. This movie was anything but cliché and the ending was unexpected. I recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in investigations, law, criminal justice, and of course U.S. History. If you are interested in an accurate representation of the motives to kill President Abraham Lincoln, or if you are curious of who committed or planned to murder Lincoln, I highly recommend watching this thrilling and shocking drama. If you enjoy the gory battles and violence during the American Civil War, I do not suggest watching this movie because it focuses on what happened after the war, and pays attention towards the investigation of President Lincoln's assassination. Overall, this movie is fantastic and captivating.
... View MoreOverall this movie was a fairly accurate, interesting film. The inaccuracies that were present however did not make much difference; such as the room the trial was held in during the movie was on he first floor while in reality it was on the third, etc. The actors were very convincing as well, they took on the passion of the individuals they were portraying and made it believable as well as suspenseful. The movie is informative in details of the Civil War as well as Lincoln's assassination and it's aftermath. I feel as though I've learned more about these topics. I was very entertained throughout the movie as it was rather fast-paced and there was a lot of action. This movie and it's plot had the potential of being filled largely with dull dialogue, however the action made me feel as though I was actually there. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination.
