What a joy to watch! Maybe you've got to like the good ol' Dolly Parton to enjoy the movie, I'm not sure. To speak for myself, I loveee Dolly and I loveee this movie! It leaves you with a smile on ya face!+ = Dolly Parton + = The chemistry between Dolly & Burt Reynolds + = The clothing, such great dresses! + = The songs - = Some small scenes are terrible to watch, 'cuz they're supposed to be funny but aren't ;). Gotta watch yourself if you'll agree with me.PS: Dolly Parton looks beautiful in this movie and I kinda feel bad that she now uses or have used botox and other injections. Because I believe no woman could have looked more beautiful that Dolly back in the days. So feminine and jolly! For all people a source of positive inspiration :)

Maybe when it was first released, this film, about a true-life Texas bordello, wowed viewers with its bawdiness and clear-cut clash of values. But thirty years later, with the internet, cell phones, and gay rights, the underlying premise of "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" strikes me as outdated and largely irrelevant, a look back at an era that was simpler and offered fewer choices.Costumes are elaborate and colorful. And the film sparkles at times. Dom DeLuise entertains with a humorously mocking performance of a self-righteous moralist who tries to shut down the two-story house of ill repute. But overall, the production seems uninspired, and the plot tends to drag, especially in the middle Act.Though Dom DeLuise and Dolly Parton are well cast, Burt Reynolds belongs in films set in other Southern states, not Texas. There is a difference. And poor Jim Nabors, giving us his most annoying Gomer Pyle imitation, is dreadfully miscast. Every time he appears on screen in this film, I cringe. With one or two exceptions the musical numbers are disappointing. For a film set deep in the heart of Texas, I could have wished for some songs about ... Texas. Production design, artwork, and musical choreography are fine. Camera angles and lighting are acceptable, but I didn't care for the wide-screen projection. This film conveys a mostly tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted tone. It no doubt entertained viewers in the early 1980s. But society moves on. New technologies, new insights, changing attitudes about sex render past events and social perspectives nostalgic or maybe even quaint. What was entertaining to viewers then may not be so to viewers now. "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" comes across as dated.

Even in 2009 this movie version of the stage play, BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN Texas, does not always ring true. For all her great talents, Dolly Parton has manipulated yet another script (she did this with STEEL MAGNOLIAS). Look at the overdone and over the top entrances...and that long, boring evening scene by a fire with Burt Reynolds. And these were suppose to be Aggie football players?? And one token black player...and one token black hostess. Come on, integration had not yet occurred in time. The tokenism was so obvious. Fortunately, Whitney Houston came along to really breathe life into "I Will Always Love You." At times exciting, vibrating, exhilarating....thanks in large measure to an over the top "evangelist" and sheriff. Boring and perplexing ending. And as for the goofs, who was watching the shooting script or controlling the editing? I must prefer a rollicking stage version.

For those of us who really watch musicals for the music this is one of the quintessential musicals of it's time . There is in particular one song that is constantly stuck in my head from this show even 25 years after its original release. The classic " Nothing Dirty Going on" stands up well with the likes of Moulon rouge , and Chicago. Expect a bit of camp humor here as Dolly was made for this roll. It's classic dolly showing up everyone else in this over the top cast and making em all look like a bunch of fools by doing her part so well. Deloise and Reynolds are clearly struggling to keep up with her acting wise throughout the film and it's blatantly obvious Dolly had way way too much fun in this roll.A great musical on a true story that really could use a remake with the right cast .
