It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

I found myself laughing pretty hard at some of the scenes. "ONE OF THESE DAYS YOUR GOING TO ASSUME A BROKEN ASS!" < I am going to work this quote into life as much as possible from now on!One of the earlier scenes has Sigerson in a fight with two horse drawn buggies and gets into a whip fight... I have never scene a whip fight and it was funny. Up until this point I was kind of watching the movie while doing other things but it quickly grabbed my attention and I found myself really enjoying it.This is what I would consider a well done silly movie. Something you can sit back and laugh at. I just finished watching Speilberg's 1941 before this one and it too was supposed to be silly and failed. I would totally recommend watching this one.

This film is a total disaster. Not funny. No plot that can be followed. Not one single character who can be liked or sympathized with and the villains are too poorly presented to even be hated. Characters break suddenly into songs and dance for no reason. There is tasteless bawdiness that is so pointless and stupid that it makes Mel Brooks look like Shakespeare. The whole picture is a mess. It's one of those pictures that one wonders out loud "how did this ever get made? If you like Wilder, Kahn, and Feldman, Sherlock Holmes stories or comedy films ... skip this one.

i had never seen user reviews for "Smarter Brother" previously and i was amazed at the number of viewers who seemed to have so much to criticize in the very funny film. some people, when reviewing a film seem to treat it like an artichoke, pulling it apart until there is nothing left. if i enjoy a film and can watch it over and over is my only criteria. DID I ENJOY IT? you bet! i have seem this movie many times and i always find it enjoyable and funny. without out going into the plot and cast members, this happens to be a very funny Sherlock Holmes parody. there is a Dudley Moore/Peter Cook send-up of a classic Holmes tale also available. while that film has some funny moments, Gene Wilder's Smarter Brother is funny all the way through. to really enjoy the film, i suggest you see it and then decide just how enjoyable and funny it is. if all else fails, you can always dance the Kangaroo Hop.by the way, be on the look out for the cameo by Albert Finney. you must be fast, as he just pops in and out with no prolonged closeup.

Well, I can see that this movie really didn't get the best reviews, which surprised me as it is one of my favorite movies ever.I thought back on it while posting my 9 out of 10 review and I can see how others might not enjoy this style of humor, as it does take getting used to and not everyone gets that chance because the movie is rarely played. If you are a Gene Wilder fan, a Marty Feldman fan, a Madeline Kahn (sp?) fan, or a fan of sherlock holmes, then this movie is for you. Yes, it's a bit dry in places, and yes it can be a bit flighty, but if you can stick it out and just turn off the logical part of your mind for a bit and go along with the wild ride, I think that in the end, you'll buy a ticket and ask to go on the ride again. The singing numbers, the wild looks of Kahn, Wilder and of course my buggy eyed friend, Feldman, help to make this movie quirky and humorous at the same time. The dark London (I think it's in London) streets and the perpetual night helps to make this a very fun period piece with humor at every step. For someone such as myself who does enjoy a good Sherlock Holmes story, I truly loved the way that our main character (Wilder) is constantly getting things so way off. Such as when he thinks he is describing the person on the other side of the door based on the clues he has and then he is so way off that it's hilarious.See this movie, and if you need to watch it again to fully enjoy it, give it about a week and then see it again. It's worth the multiple viewings.
