The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

I really like this movie because it brings back memories from when I loved it as a kid. I remember watching it over and over again, and after watching it again now I still like it. The reason I like this movie is kind of hard to explain so this might come out weird : it's "cool". The main character Cody Maverick is just really "cool" and awesome. Again another personal preference: the movie is about surfing:my favourite sport. I really like surfing and since this movie is about surfing and they depict it well, it scores major points in my book. The surfing montage where Cody gets the hang of surfing is beautiful. I really like the cast of supporting characters as well: chicken Joe, Big Z, Lani and the others. I really like the final surf off. It really sets itself apart from other movies by not making the main character win literally but figuratively since he helps his friend. Surf's up is also an extremely funny movie and I love it's mockumentary style. I really like the fact that during the movie big z trains Cody to let go and stuff like that. I think they should've left out the chicken Joe expedition thing and they should've made the movie longer. All in all even though Surf's up is not perfect but it's funny, "cool", has good voice acting , has a nice final surf off and is about surfing.

Cody Maverick is a surfing penguin. A documentary camera crew is following him. He tells them about the late legendary surfer Big Z who came to Antarctica when Cody was a child. He becomes the best surfer of Shiverpool. He's bullied by his bigger brother Glen and dreams of leaving the bland small town life. Reggie Belafonte organizes "the Big Z Memorial Surf Off" on Pen Gu Island. The arrogant Tank 'The Shredder' Evans is the best surfer around. Recruiter Mikey Abromowitz reluctantly takes Cody to the Surf Off. Cody befriends fellow competitor Chicken Joe and falls for lifeguard Lani Aliikai. Tank is making fun of Big Z and Cody ends up on an one-on-one challenge with Tank. Cody wipes out horribly. Lani brings him to surfing recluse Geek who teaches him important life lessons. The documentary crew is a fun conceit like the one on 'The Office'. I like the voice work especially the overlapping quality. It gives it a fun rapid-fire interaction that is missing from most animations. It also gives it a little more adult feel that distinguishes it from the other penguin cartoons. The movie generally suffers from being released 7 months after 'Happy Feet' with people having a bit of penguin fatigue. The humor is sarcastic and also a bit more adult. In general, I really like Cody and the rest of the group.

A really sweet, good-natured animated film about a surfing penguin that dares to posit that having fun is more important than winning. It's got an original (for animation) mockumentary approach that encourages an amiable improvisational feel to the whole thing, particularly the actors' voice recordings. Reportedly the cast really did record together in the studio, instead of in the usual isolation, just so there could be that kind of comic by-play. On the other hand, it never really rises from the pleasant and witty to be deeply funny, or moving. And while some of the small story twists, and the structure is novel, the basic characters are pretty stock. Some people have called it a Christopher Guest film in animated form, but for me it lacks the complexity of characters that makes Guest's weird worlds so amazing. None-the-less, I'm glad I saw it, and there's certainly enough for a grown-up to enjoy. I just wished it had blown me away.
