Good movie but grossly overrated

While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

Low budget shark films generally do not get a good reputation and one can see why. There are a few guilty pleasure ones, like the first two 'Sharknado' films while not considering them great by any stretch. Most are just painfully amateurish with very little to them to set them apart or make them different, other than the odd silly idea not well executed. The good news is for 'Shark Lake' is that there are far worse shark films out there (those from SyFy and The Asylum are notorious in this regard) and at least there are redeeming values, even if not many. Something that cannot be said for too many other low-budget shark films, of the shark films seen recently 'Shark Lake' is actually one of the least bad. The not so good news is that 'Shark Lake' is still not a good film at all, with a lot wrong with it and the wrong elements are done poorly. That 'Shark Lake' stars, or more like features, Dolph Lundgren is one of three reasons why people are likely to see it for, the others being if they are trying to see as many shark-attack films as possible (my main reason actually) or intrigued by the interesting idea the film had going for it. Lundgren is the best thing about it, his character and presence do feel shoe-horned in and seemed to be mainly there for obligatory star power, but Lundgren does try hard and gives actually a pretty reasonable performance considering what he has to work with.Did think that the scenery was fairly atmospheric, though wasted by how terrible the rest of the production values are and that the location didn't feel enough of its own character. The music is ok, not exactly memorable but gets the job done and there are far more ill-fitting scores in low-budget films. However, everything else is bad. The shark effects look terrible, even for low budget, and there is not much menace, suspense or fun in the mostly under-utilised and under-characterised shark action. No menace or personality here from the threat, not even unintentional humour or weird goofiness.'Shark Lake's' horror element is not scary or suspenseful enough and then there is a romance thrown in that is too bland to feeling anything for and too strange to take seriously. Pretty good idea but executed in a not too good way.Rest of the acting is dreadful, especially from Sara Lane, and the characters are not worth investing in or interesting. The script is a shambles, how the actors said all that awkward and toe-curlingly cringe-worthy dialogue without falling about laughing in front of the camera is worth anyone's guess. The story has nothing to it and doesn't do enough or execute well its main selling point. The direction is flat. Overall, there's worse but there's not much to this. 3/10 Bethany Cox

"Shark Lake" is one of those types of movies where you look at the movie cover or the poster and think "why?". But still, it is a Dolph Lundgren movie, so I decided to sit down and watch it. I did grow up watching his movies after all."Shark Lake" is not Dolph Lundgren's brightest moment in cinema history, not even by a long shot. Actually, I will go as far as to question why he actually did this movie, because it was just such a far slip away from his previous countless action movies, both good and questionable ones. The story in this movie is about Clint Gray (played by Dolph Lundgren), a former criminal trying to do right by his estranged daughter Carly Gray (played by Lily Brooks O'Briant). But when the local lake falls prey to vicious man-eating sharks, single-mom and overzealous police offer Meredith Hendricks (played by Sara Malakul Lane) pick up arms to defend the town and her daughter Carly. But the danger of the sharks and the fate of the dealt cards in her hand leave her crossing paths with her former husband Clint Gray...Right, well there was nothing overly Shakespearian or thespian to this storyline. It is a simple storyline, for sure, but it serves it purpose well enough, because it doesn't really beat around the bush. However, a shark movie needs to have sharks that are realistic and that you actually think of as being a real threat. However, the sharks in "Shark Lake" failed to deliver that, and they were more of a CGI internship project gone straight to DVD.The action in "Shark Lake" was adequate, taking into consideration what kind of movie this is. However, it should be said that you shouldn't get your hopes up here, if you are a fan of Dolph Lundgren in any way, because it wasn't up to level with his usual movies.Having seen this movie, I can now cross it off the list. And I can with all honesty say that I will never be making a return trip to watch "Shark Lake", because it doesn't support more than a single viewing in any way; and actually if you do get through the first viewing then that is an accomplishment in itself. If you enjoy shark movies, stay well clear of "Shark Lake". If you enjoy Dolph Lundgren movies, don't go out of your way to watch "Shark Lake". It is, in fact, a less than mediocre movie experience in every sense of the word.

When he was in his heyday in the mid to late 1980s, with a Bond and a Rocky smash behind him, it must have seemed to Lundgren that he would wind up in the 'Stallone/Schwarzenegger' bracket with strings of mega smash box office hits and multi million dollar contracts. Sadly for him, it didn't quite pan out that way with a stream of dreadful B movies coming his way instead from studios desperate to get a smash on their hands. If I were him I'd be looking to dish out a Drago style beating to my handlers for landing me a load of crappy roles in films with 'The XXXXX' in the title... A plus for him is that he isn't the worse performer in this pile of doo doo, which must be the dreadful female lead. The film is surprisingly good fun with all the silliness, cheese, and dreadful acting and ludicrous scripting you'd expect. The cinematography is also worth a mention, some of the nature shots are quite stunning. Harmless inoffensive twaddle at best.

I watched the trailer alone. Now right off the bat, its not working for me and this is just on the trailer. Anyone who has visited or lives in Lake Tahoe will know. I'm shocked whoever produced this movie didn't know the facts first before even trying to film this movie. 1) You can't swim in Lake Tahoe in a bathing suit - the water temps are 59 degrees and lower. You start freezing to death after a few minutes.2) Lake Tahoe is a fresh water lake. I didn't know there were such things as fresh water sharks. Sharks are salt water...I could go on, but won't. You get the idea.
