Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;

Robert DeNiro, Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, and Toby Jones star in "Red Lights" from 2012. When I first started watching this I thought, "Robert DeNiro and Sigourney Weaver in a horror film?" I don't like horror and was shocked that such fine actors would do one.But "Red Lights" isn't a horror film despite some horror elements. It's about a paranormal debunker Margaret Mathison (Weaver) and her assistant Tom (Murphy) who go around the country exposing faith healers and mediums. Weaver teaches a class at the university, in direct opposition to the work of a fellow professor (Jones) who has a well- funded parapsychology research department.When renowned Uri Geller type Simon Silver (DeNiro) decides to come out of retirement, Tom insists to Margaret that they work on debunking Silver, and she refuses, giving her reason in a moving monologue.Nevertheless, Tom persists, putting himself in danger, bringing the film to a powerful ending.I am not sure why this film has such a low rating - I enjoyed it. True, of the two big twists, one was easily guessed. The acting was wonderful, and as someone wrote, it was great to see Sigourney Weaver, who like many actresses has aged out of leading lady status, regrettably. When she was in her twenties, she had the voice lesson after mine. She went on to a wonderful career, and she should still have one.I love Cillian Murphy, one of the most interesting-looking actors around. He gives an excellent performance. DeNiro as Silver is his usual strong presence.I thought the ending was fabulous! The film itself is slightly reminiscent of a '60s film, "The Power" starring George Hamilton and Suzanne Pleshette.

This movie could have been really good, but is not! It's incredible how all the tension build during the first half of the movie it's lost during the other half… it's like if the Director and the writers got lazy and rush the finale. The actors made a good effort to keep up with the movie, but it's just horrible how all the introduction of the main character Dr. Tom Buckley (Murphy) goes from an intelligent, clever and motivated assistant professor to the Dumb##$$ ludicrous, naive person of the finale, it's just not coherent,. SUCH A SHAME! Absolutely ridiculous! Sigourney Weaver makes also a good effort. All and all, I think it's not worth to watch it even in a dull Sunday afternoon. 3 out of 10

I think that no matter how well the main cast did with their roles, in the end what ruins this film is the cutting choices. Sigourney Weaver plays an intelligent, successful woman investigating a ridiculous subject (parapsychology)and you have to ask why ? Nobody in the sciences takes pseudo-science nonsense seriously enough to warrant the waste of such a brilliant mind. She has a secret,however, her son, who at age four takes a tumble in her office and is in a coma, and has been for many years. The interesting turn of events is that she was investigating Robert De Niro's character (Silver) at the time of the accident. There is one quick scene, a passing mention and poof it is gone from the film. This would be the only rational for her activities...it is almost completely lost in the editing of the film. Instead Cortes gives us another quick turn at the end that is not satisfying or even really explained. Just dumped on the audience with a few quick cuts to some re-angled shots from earlier in the film. De Niro, is De Niro; powerful actor. Weaver, real talent; Murphy, first rate; and Olsen one of the best new actresses of our time. All of these actors do well. Maybe the problem is that Cortes, the director--writer--editor--producer, is not at home doing American films. He is not used to editing for American audiences. Maybe he is wearing far too many hats for a new director. Maybe this is the way things are done in Spain. Unfortunately, I did not go to see a film from Spain. You wonder why these actors did this film...it was filmed in Barcelona one of the most beautiful cities in the world.Outside of thinking of what Weavers motivations might have been, I did not find this film to be of any interest as a thriller. It was not thrilling, interesting or well made.
