Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

In the 2008 Presidential Election, Vice President Al Gore ran for the Democrats and George W. Bush ran for the Republicans. Many believe that Florida determined the 2008 race, resulting in Bush winning the election. It was alleged that "hanging chads," could have resulted in inaccurate machine counts. Gore sued for a recount, Republican Secretary of State Katherine Harris (Laura Dern) is pressured to call for a recount, the Florida and U.S. Supreme courts do not agree on what circumstances should sanction the Florida recount.At the time, Bush's brother, Jeb was the governor of Florida, Republican Katherine Harris was Florida's Secretary of State (Laura Dern). Excellent way to learn about the election and understand why a "hanging chad" became such a topic of conversation.

Recount is a TV movie about the 2000 United States Presidential election. This political drama was produced by Kevin Spacey, who also stars in the film together with Denis Leary,Laura Dern,Tom Wilkinson and John Hurt.It was written by Danny Strong and directed by Jay Roach.This docudrama examines the events surrounding the most controversial presidential election in United States history. The highest office in the country is up for grabs, and the fate of the free world may hang in the balance. When the initial tallies from Florida voting polls prove inconclusive, the decision is made to hold a recount. But it's a controversial decision to say the least, and one that caused many skeptical voters to suspect foul play. Eventually the case would go all the way to the Supreme Court, and as the trial gets under way charismatic Texas Republican James Baker attempts to rally public support for the recount. But the Democrats aren't about to lie down and die just yet, because Al Gore's former chief of staff Ron Klain can play hardball with the best of the old elephants. Now, as these two opposing giants come to blows over the fate of the presidency, they gradually begin to develop a grudging respect for one another.This was a talky and smart political drama about 2000 presidential election mess.Despite the fact that it doesn't embrace its potential for farce,suspense or outrage,it was an astute and deliciously engrossing.It also has truly made its mark of excellence on TV.

Guys, you don't treat a film like a party manifesto. It's a form of art. In the case of Recount it's the art of telling a recent historical event with many facts and complex situations turning it into a suspenseful drama. Directing, acting and writing are decent. Similar political movies like The Special Relationship work better in terms of dramatization and character development. Recount on the other hand is kind of busy keeping up with the facts (I don't wanna argue that all in the film is true, that's hardly the point). All in all, it's 7 out of 10 stars "for my money" (now, what kind of expression is that, anyway?).Democracy could be so easy: people vote by marking a circle next to the name of their candidate, a committee counts the votes manually, and the candidate with the most votes gets elected. End of story. The rest is BS.Unfortunately it didn't work in Florida of 2000 that way. People where prevented from voting because they shared their names with a felon (and where black, by the way, and I can't see how this wasn't the work of Jeb Bush). People's votes weren't counted because the chad were dimpled and not penetrated (yeah, I know Beavis...). People just couldn't see who they were voting for cause the chad were so confusing ....Listen, I'm not saying W. didn't win this at the end of the day (I'm not saying he did either). All I know is every voted is worth to be (re-)counted. The GOP tried everything to prevent that from happening. They did a lot of spinning, so that some of their victims would now say: but Gore only wanted to count the Gore votes... blah blah... They wanted to recount those districts where Buchanan got so many votes he couldn't believe it himself. There wasn't enough time to recount the whole state so of course smart Republicans said that that was what they wanted. One side fought for every vote to be counted, one didn't. Now, you can question the motives, but how about giving that the benefit of the doubt for once? Democracy is the right of the people to get their vote counted. Democracy means your vote won't just get thrown away. Let's be partisan about it. Cause I'm not sorry for it. End of story.

My local library has done it again. Placed on it's shelf another really great movie I've never heard of. Pretty easy pick when I saw it was about the 2000 Presidential election. Like most i was watching that November night when all measure of political insanity broke out. I was videotaping that night and now (even though Gore "lost"),I wish I'd saved that tape.Most of us out there know the storyline and has been covered here. I can commend the creators very highly on this for bringing a very detailed & as truthful as possible telling of all that went wrong. A lot of what went wrong existed before the election even began.The cast here plays each singular role in a manner that makes you feel you are watching exactly what these people felt at that time. They never makes the person their portraying into a 2 dimensional cartoon. Some here feel the movie is leaning in favor of the Democrats as the good guys & the GOP the bad. What I saw was that Gore's supporters wanted to play fair as possible and the GOP well,they didn't. I'm not trying to say "all" republicans are like that but given what happened that night and up until Nov. 2008,no one should be surprised at how they are depicted here. I still feel the storytelling was as fair as possible to both parties and former candidatesI honestly did feel the sense of loss all over again,when (on the phone) Gore tells Kevin Spacey "I can't win." "Even if I win,I lose". The end of the film is an unfortunate reminder of what was to come next for the U.S. , but if you haven't seen this,I wont give it away. I will say there have been good made for TV movies but for some reason,HBO seems to make better ones. 10 stars,count 'em 10. {END}
