A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Police Story is a quintessential landmark in Jackie Chan's filmography. The film is a perfect showcase for his immense talent, that makes him one of the greatest physical performers that has ever graced the silver screen. The plot of the film is fairly simple, Jackie is a police officer tasked with protecting a key witness from a mob boss, and his endless supply of henchmen. The script is essentially there to serve the action whilst keeping things moving at a brisk pace, which it does effortlessly. The main attraction of this film is obviously going to be the incredible action set-pieces, as-well as the astonishing stunt-work, which holds up incredibly well. The film features stunt-work that is absolutely breathtaking to witness, of which I can only commend Jackie and his team for what they have achieved. The sheer dedication to get every set-piece crafted to perfection is phenomenal. (And finally after decades Jackie has earned himself an honorary Oscar and long overdue recognition from the Academy Awards.)Police Story is a rip-roaring action masterclass, that also features scenes that are genuinely hilarious. The film opens up with an incredible bus chase and manages to maintain it's high-calibre intensity all the way though till the films incredible climax.

Seriously, this movie is hard to match in terms of action and martial arts. It is hard for me to decide which one I like more 'Police Story' or 'Project A'. They're both one of the greatest action movies. Anyway, Jackie Chan was setting standards in the early 80's for his output of films and a lot of studios were copying what he was doing. He was upset about it which lead to the movie having the title 'Police Story'. Like most of Jackie Chan's movies 'Police Story' has a simple but effective plot (because the movie is quite focused on the plot) and a simple story. But since the movie doesn't spend too much time on fooling around it is great in my opinion. It has humorous parts and I honestly thought they were out of place but they didn't bother me so I feel they're fine. I also honestly felt the humour here wasn't up to Jackie's standard but that's just me. There isn't some super bad guy here like a usual Jackie movie but I felt that made the movie that much more effective since it gave the movie more of a realistic feeling, thus making the characters seem more human. I feel it gave the movie an extra edge and more punching power. The acting is pretty good as usual with fast dialogs to go a bit faster into the action. Which is in my opinion one of the great things about this movie. I often start to get bored when there is too much dialog in a movie. It even has stunts that many movies will not be able to match for example the squatter village destruction. That scene gives me chills. Even Jackie says it is the best in his movies. Not to mention what happened in the mall at the climax of the movie. As usual 'Police Story' has a razor sharp editing with pin point accuracy. I've always had great respect for the editing in Jackie Chan's movies. Also something that many editors can not match. As usual, Jackie worked his butt off in this movie to create martial arts fights that he feel works for him. The climax at the mall has been matched by only a handful of movies in terms of tension, excitement and choreography. I feel exhausted each time after the climax, like as if I was in a fight. I honestly feel only a handful (if not less) have matched the movie in terms of action and martial arts choreography. I feel this movie will age well and I still love it as much as I loved it when I watched it the first time.9/10

In my opinion Police Story is Jackie Chan's best movie all around and mandatory viewing for anyone that considers themselves a fan of martial arts and action films. After not really hitting it off with director James Glickenhaus and The Protector not exactly setting the world on fire at the box office, Jackie really felt he had something to prove with his own cop/action film. As producer, director and star Jackie put his heart and soul into this production and by doing so he made the perfect movie vehicle for himself, as well as a classic action film that went through the roof at the box office in Hong Kong. Police Story also gained international interest from audiences that The Protector failed to generate. Nothing against James Glickenhaus. I'm a fan of his as well and I personally love and champion his grindhouse vigilante classic The Exterminator. Anyways, Jackie Chan is a cop working on a case of a ruthless drug dealer. He also is assigned to protect a prosecution witness, Selina(played by the gorgeous Taiwanese model turned actress Brigette Lin) from dope pushing goons. It is ironic Brigette is the damsel in distress, as I am used to her dispatching hundreds of people in her swordplay films. Brigette, as always did a great job. Another stunning and very talented actress, Maggie Cheung is Jackie's love interest and girlfriend. After watching Police Story, as well as many of Jackie's other films it is a miracle he is still alive and not in a wheelchair. Police Story set the bar for the insane action and stunts Jackie would employ in his subsequent films. As far as the tone of the film it changes throughout the film from pie in the face slapstick to serious drama, with tons of fighting and death defying stunts. Director/producer/actor Jackie made it work and created a great franchise as well. Overall, Police Story (and its sequels) is always a fun film to revisit and like I said mandatory if you consider yourself a fan of Jackie's or the action genre. Also, Jackie shows his talent as a vocalist by singing the theme song of the movie!

I was a teenager when Jackie Chan finally hit it big in America. I went to go see all his American releases and feel in love with the super star that does all of his own stunts. It wasn't until later when I grew up that I watched all his older stuff, which I feel is much better. The biggest difference between his stuff when he was known in America and the stuff when he was just the biggest star in China, is that the stuff he made during his international sensation era was that he was trying hard to appeal to a grander audience. He would do cartoonish films that both adults and kids could see without censorship. Thought these movies where just as entertaining for it's action scenes and stunt work, it's missing something, drama. The stunt work was so intense on this film that it added to the drama of the film. Jackie Chan plays a cop determine to take down a true bad guy and rather than showing this determination by crying on cue, Jackie and his legendary stunt team did it through the action. Jackie hurt himself in order to show officer Kevin Lee's determination to stop the villain.I seen the movie a few time and every time the stunt work just makes me curl. When Jackie gets his head pushed into a glass wall, I felt it. when he was getting jumped by a gang, I felt it. when he was in his car driving down the hill crashing into sheds, I felt it and it hurt. This early work of Chan was nothing but extreme an absolutely must see if you love action movies
