There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

Normal is drama love story that deals with a solid foundation of a married couple which became complicated after the husband (Tom Wilkinson) confess that he believes that he was a woman that is just trapped in a man's body. I personally think that this film is very realistic, it showed how this gender identity problem can occurred even to normal people, couple and families. As for this film, Roy and Irma portrayed a very loving and religious couple, who would have thought that this kind of problem can possible happen even to almost perfect couple after more than two decades of being together. In this film, the gender identity problem was the main conflict but as you get to watch the film up to the latter part, you will realize that it's not only about the gender problem, it's more on acceptance and love for each other. It showed that no matter the circumstances, Irma accepted Roy for who he is and who he wanted to be, she loved him and supported him all the way until Roy eventually felt the self- satisfaction he always wanted. Overall this film was an awesome piece, a very touching and inspiring story for all the couple out there who are going through this tough situation in life.

This is an incredible powerful movie regarding unconditional love, acceptance and responsibility for ourself and our loved ones. Roy and Irma are a middle class couple with one rebellious adult son and a quick minded teenager daughter. They are a pillar of their small community and active in the local church. During the celebration of their 25th marriage anniversary Roy passes out. The couple go for counseling advice to their pastor. Roy admits that for several years has been struggling against the desire to became a woman because he feels entrapped in a man's body. Irma is flabbergasted and ask Roy to leave the house. Roy goes ahead with his plan to become a female with courage enduring the taunts of his colleagues at work, the bitter irony of his son and the ostracism of his congregation. However Irma eventually ask him to go back living with her and help him in his journey to become Ruth giving him advice and support and acceptance. When the pastor tell her that she is free to divorce Roy she simply says"" Leave him?He is my hearth!!The final moving scene is the night before the sex change operation when Irma hugs Roy and ask him to see his male body nude for the very last time.

There are no words... As you watch this complex chef d'oeuvre, you'll find it easy to judge and point the finger like everyone else around "Ruth". Then you'll realize the movie isn't about him, it's about his wife. You'll see that finger come back to you pretty quickly and the judgments will stay put as you try to imagine how you would react, cope and live your life if this happened to you.Jessica Lange has come a long way since King Kong. No longer the sexpot counterpart of Jack Nicholson, she holds her own opposite Tom Wilkinson and really shows us she has only gotten better since her fantastic portrayal of Frances Farmer in "Frances"

"Normal" tells the story of Roy and Irma, who have been married for 25 years. The marriage has got ups and downs, but after 25 years you would think that they've seen the worst. At least, that's what Irma thought. But then Roy reveals something he had kept secret for quite some years. He doesn't feel comfortable in his own body, he feels like God gave him the wrong body. He wants to be a woman. What follows is the struggle of Irma and Roy, handling this problem. First we got Roy's part, who feels relieved after his confession and happy as well being finally 'out of the closet'. But his colleagues and friends aren't very supportive and understanding. There's the scene where Roy got punched by some of his colleagues after he came to work wearing earrings. I really loved this scene. Not the beating of course but the part where he is walking to the workplace wearing men clothes and still looking like a man, but wearing typical women earrings. It thought it was amazingly brave doing this! I felt sorry for him as well because I knew he would be punched by some of his colleagues for this.On the other hand we have the struggle of Irma, who suddenly has lost her husband after 25 years of marriage. The problem isn't that her husband didn't thread her respectful neither that he was cheating on her. The problem was that her husband who she had loved for more than 25 years, suddenly was becoming a woman. The problem is also that she doesn't have anyone else, she doesn't want anyone else either."Normal" is a magnificent movie handling a very difficult subject: sex change. Both leading actors are brilliant. Tom Wilkinson is extraordinary good. Magnificent performance! Jessica Lange on the other hand is very touching in her role of being the supportive and understanding wife. Being there for her husband, through anything. It's this element of unconditional love and the outstanding acting performances by both leading actors that makes the movie so wonderful. Certainly worth watching! 8/10
