It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

Judging by looking at this movie, the film-makers must have thought they had gold. The original source material seemed good enough to create and interesting and deep thought provoking sci-fi movie with. I seemed however like they had no idea how to handle its concept properly. Instead they threw in some adventure and lame action to make the movie a good and interesting one but the end result is far from satisfying. It's an obviously cheaply made movie, with low production values, which can be seen back in its small sets and the unimaginative look of the overall movie, which is especially disappointing for a movie of its sort. Yes you can call this a typical straight to DVD B-movie.What makes the movie all the more worse are the acting performances. Some people should just never be allowed to work in the movie business. This movie does really have some untalented people uttering their lines in front of the camera in it. The movie still has David Carradine though, which always adds some pleasure to any movie. The movie is just never any exciting or spectacular to watch. The movie could had raised some thought provoking elements and themes but at fails at every attempt to do so. The action and more adventurous elements of the movie are also far from good enough to still consider this movie a watchable one.The story is being told too messy and without any imagination really. Seems like director Gwyneth Gibby has no passion for the genre really and also certainly no experience in it. There really is no reason why you should ever watch this clumsy little movie.4/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/

This isn't a big movie---it's a simple story without twists and dilemmas and haunted complicated emotional bits. But it's Asimov, so you should expect nothing else. It's like a lengthy scifi short story, something you would find in an anthology. The movie made me really happy, though. They use a lot of archetypal sets---the archaeological dig with snake pits and drinks-in-the-afternoon bars with sand floors and monkeys (iirc someone was even paid in coins kept in a leather bag), the expensive glass building with indoor waterfall, the musty religious temple with lots of columns, the spooky cave lit by kerosene-dipped rag torches. One might say it's unimagineative, but I found it a comforting way to communicate familiar ideas quickly and effortlessly.I don't want to hear any hog-slaver about how the movie was cheap because it was set in India---I thought the production quality was completely adequate. And I certainly won't entertain this nonsense about Jennifer Burns not being ''convincing'' whatever that means. Jennifer Burns completely made the movie for me. I thought she was open and gracious. You should keep this movie within reach at all times. Watch it with some ice cream and strawberries once you get home after embarrassing yourself by crying on the subway. (again.)

I'm rating this a FIVE, but I'd probably rate it a good deal lower (probably more like a TWO) if I weren't such a fan of Jennifer Burns. It's certainly not one of the greatest movies of all time, but it's definitely a lot better than hard-core sci-fi (and especially Asimov) fans give it credit for. For myself personally, I'm very definitely not a fan of sci-fi films and got this one only because of Jennifer, whom I really got a kick out of in the "Josh Kirby: Time Warrior" series. I'm also not at all a fan of sci-fi short stories, only of full-length novels, and I haven't read "Nightfall" or any other Asimov story though I have read all of his novels."Nightfall" is one of the most popular sci-fi short stories of all time (and probably the most popular), so it's to be expected that Asimov fans would be disappointed in this low-budget production which does have many of the faults that its critics point out. On the other hand, if you're like me and you've never read the short story then you'll probably find this movie reasonably enjoyable, especially for Jennifer Burns. Just recognize that you're probably not seeing a faithful adaptation of the short story, any more than Roland Joffe's 1995 production of "The Scarlet Letter" was at all a faithful adaptation of Hawthorne's novel. As a huge admirer of Hawthorne, I abhor what Joffe did to him, so I can understand why Asimov fans might detest this adaptation of their favorite sci-fi story, but I still recognize that Demi Moore turned in a really nice performance in "The Scarlet Letter" and I think Jennifer Burns did likewise in "Nightfall." I assume that fans of Asimov's story should take heed of criticism of this movie by fellow Asimov fans, but I really found Jennifer Burns quite enjoyable in her role as the saucy and headstrong Illyra, so I'm giving it a FIVE for her performance while recognizing that I'd probably rate it a good deal lower if it were some actress I didn't at all care about (or if I were a super-fan of Asimov's story). But dang it, it's unfortunate that Jennifer's career seems to have foundered on these kind of Corman productions and that she hasn't had a shot at some better properties.

I'm writing this comment to warn all of you out there who think that a low average here on IMDb means a laughable b-movie (as I usually do ;) ). This movie is only annoying! Even more so if you've actually read the story that it claims to be originated from. The movie looks as if it was produced in the late 80's (but the cover says year 2000) and the guy who adopted the story from novel to screenplay can not have read Asimov's version. He can at most have gotten half of it retold by someone speaking a foreign language that he doesn't really understand. Why else would he completely remove the second half of the story? Did the crew quit as a protest to the horrific acting? I can only guess...Summary: This movie is a total waste of time!
