During the invasion of Normandy the photograph of a slim Korean man in German uniform was found. It transpired that the man had served as a soldier in the Japanese, Russian and German armies. His incredible story inspired director Kang Je-Gyu to create this epic war drama.

Rival runners are sent to war as punishment for rioting. This film was sensational! The battle scenes are remarkable, very realistic and the photography is amazing. Japanese and Koreans are fighting together against Russians, although they hate each other. Needless to say, there's a lot of tension between the characters. The character development was really great, as the men obtained status during their time in war. This was one of the most stunning war epics I've ever had the pleasure of watching. The cinematography, the mere scale of the entire production, the music, the battle scenes - everything was just brilliant. Completely and utterly stunning! Very unpredictable ending, as well.

I have seen this movie three times twice with subtitles once dubbed in English, much better with the subtitles. The movie is fast paced excellent story line,( They always say that truth is better than Fiction!!) and you actually care about the characters, even the goofy overweight fun loving friend Jong Dae Lee who turns out to be an opportunist !! The battle scenes are fantastic and the cinematography and FX are top rate. I have come to believe that Foreign movie makers are starting to outdue Hollywood. The attack scene with the Russian tanks is amazing considering these tanks were 1930's vintage !! The ending will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and at least all choked up if not actually in tears. I know the story is based on actual events and not a biography exactly, but the feelings and emotions it will stir in you are amazing. Watch it and then watch it again. My kudos to the makers of this film a definite 10+ on my scale.

This is a production which shows us the people in pursuit of some ideals who think anything would be suitable to achieve that goal can be terribly misguided in their actions. The movie tells us the real difference between any kind of two people lays only on surface, and the real challenge with virtue is to understand the other person. Its a good movie with a right message even tough it has some mistakes in it.I am not going to say much about factual or continuation errors in the movie, all I can say they are not intolerable. But I can recommend this movie without hesitation to any human. Its a great example what happens when you chose to fight rather than putting aside your differences.

I would start by comparing it to My Way. But I give you two reasons why this movie is better.1. It's not about two brothers, but about two rivals, coming from two very different nations, brought closer by the love for sport.2. Their journey seems to be more like a rite of passage.Let me tell you this. The psychological study of the characters reminded me in one episode of their journey of The Way Back. But My Way represents a step further. As the two main characters start off by being rival children, become mortal enemies and the brother-like friends, some of their friend become enemies. It reminds me of the equilibrium between Yin and Yang. It's constantly changing, fluid, but the two must always complete one another. This dynamism is present throughout the film and makes you so drawn to it, that you never seem to notice the passing of the time. All in all, it's truly magnificent.Arguably (one of) the best war movie ever.
