... View MoreTom (Patrick Dempsey) is a commitment-phobic, marriage-avoiding playboy who spends most of his waking hours tomcatting around Manhattan (what a novel concept for a romantic comedy). Only Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), his "best friend" of ten years, has the strength of character to call him on his shallowness - even though anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of romantic comedy knows full well that the two of them are just made for each other (apparently, the only people in these situations stupid enough not to realize this universal truth are the couples themselves). But just as Tom decides he's in love with Hannah and is willing to make a lifelong commitment to her, the latter turns up engaged to a kilt-wearing dreamboat ("Rome"'s Kevin McKidd) she met in Scotland. Unaware of how Tom feels about her, Hannah asks him to be her "maid of honor" at the wedding, a role he reluctantly accepts, believing that this will place him in the perfect strategic position to sabotage the nuptials. As with virtually all romantic comedies these days, "Made of Honor" takes place in a squeaky-clean, never-never land version of New York City, where everyone attends swanky functions, dines at five-star restaurants, and drinks café mocha lattes, with nary a hint as to what any of these fantastically well-off characters do to earn all their money. And, of course, almost everyone we meet is white (with a token African-American or two, as always, thrown in for good measure). The late Sydney Pollack plays Tom's oft-married father, whose penchant for running through women at an alarming rate shows that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in that family. And, of course, Tom is surrounded by the obligatory coterie of jock friends who discuss women, commitment and sex with all the depth and maturity of a bunch of junior-high school students feeling their first stirrings of puberty. Yet, isn't it funny watching all these macho guys fixing gift baskets and discussing wedding plans? No, not really. It's safe to say that there's not a single moment in "Made of Honor" that doesn't feel utterly manufactured and desperately contrived. Add to that an annoyingly cutesy musical score, embarrassment-evoking slapstick routines - including the desperate Tom arriving late to the wedding astride a borrowed horse, no less! - gag-inducing sentimentality, and the kind of ending we thought "The Graduate" had so brilliantly put an end to forty-some-odd years ago. Thus, despite the story's being told from a man's viewpoint for a change, at the end of the day, it's still the same old romantic comedy hooey we've been subjected to from time immemorial.
... View MoreThe theme of the movie Made of Honor is portraying that finding true love is not always right there in front of you, sometimes you have to fight for what you want. Finding true love is an obstacle for anyone but for Tom there are many things that try to get in his way but he doesn't let it. This movie shows you different ways that you can show affection and make best friends in the process. The story begins when two friends, Hannah and Tom, meet back up since they had graduated from high school. They get to know each other again and decide to remain best friends. After having dinner, they go out more often doing casual things such as going to the grocery store, getting flowers and shopping, but Hannah does all this knowing that Tom has a problem with commitment when it comes to the ladies. During all this time that Hannah spends with Tom she starts to develop feelings for him.As Hannah goes on a trip for her job in England, she meets a guy named Colin, who she falls madly in love with. When Tom goes to meet Hannah at the airport, thinking that he is going to get to tell her how much he loves her, she brings Colin to meet him and all her family. Tom doesn't know what to feel at this point in time. He knows that the chance of him ever getting to let her know how he really feels about her has just gone away. But he knows that for her sake he better put a fake smile on that face and be happy for her.Tom then decides that he needs to find out more about Colin, so he invites him to play a game of basketball with him and his buddies. Colin doesn't have very good luck at the game of basketball until he decides that he needs to show these guys how to play a real game. Colin then starts shooting slam dunks and shocking Tom and all the guys. During the game, Tom comes to the realization that Colin really does love Hannah and as long as she is happy that is all that matters. Hannah then wants Tom to be her Made of Honor. Tom doesn't know what to think but how in the world could he say no, this would be the perfect chance to spend more time with her and be right there for whatever she might need. Then, one of the bridesmaids that Hannah picks has to be one of the girls that Tom had a one night stand with so this should be quite the obstacle. After helping Hannah with all the wedding stuff, Tom goes to England where the wedding is going to be held at. He had already decided that he would never get to be with Hannah so he jumps in the bed with one of the bridesmaids and what do you know if Hannah didn't catch him with her while she was coming to tell Tom that she loved him too.Now Tom knew that it was over between Hannah and him and that there definitely would be no chance since Hannah had just seen his true colors. Tom decides to leave but with the good advice of Hannah's mother and all his friends he turns around and heads to the wedding, hoping that it's not too late. Tom jumps on a horse and rides away to go to the church. By the time that Tom makes it they hadn't said I do yet, so he rushes in and says "Hannah you can't do this", Tom is shaken up a bit by the drastic entrance he had made to the church, so when Hannah said "Tom are you okay?" He knew that she really still did care. Tom rises up and they both kissed. Tom and Hannah lived happily ever after. Even though Tom had a hard time fighting for his true love they both knew what each other wanted the whole time.A movie that portrays the same theme as Made of Honor is The Notebook. Made of Honor portrayed several different techniques such as camera angles and a zoom lens. These two techniques were used in two different scenes. The camera angle that was used is the high-angle shot. This is when the camera is shot high above eye level. This was done when the scene of England started. To get the full affect of the country, the camera angle had to be high enough to catch the full view. The other technique that was used is the zoom lens. This is when a series of lenses that keep an image in constant focus. This took place when Hannah was getting ready for her wedding. The camera just stopped on her so that the audience could see exactly what is portrayed as an England Wedding.
... View MoreWhile some think Made of Honor was too much like all the other romantic comedies about two best friends of the opposite sex, I thought it was endearing, touching, and fun to watch. What makes this movie even more enjoyable is the sexy Patrick Dempsey that plays Tom, a single, wealthy, handsome guy that loves women. His best friend Hannah is played by Michelle Monaghan. She is the adorable girl that has been putting up with Tom and all of his relationship rules since college. She is the one girl that Tom can always depend on, and he is the guy that Hannah hopes will change and open his eyes about her. It does not take long for the viewer to figure out the theme of this film. While the two seem like best friends, it is obvious that their relationship will change by the end of the film. This is the synopsis in most romantic comedies. But in this film you feel the emotions and frustrations of Tom and Hannah. Throughout the movie there is a pattern or motif of how you feel for each character. In one scene you are mad at Tom, and feel sorry for Hannah; but the next scene you might feel sorry for Tom and be mad at Hannah. The main focus in this film is the relationship struggles between two best friends. This movie could be compared to My Best Friend's Wedding, except the ending is much happier for both people. When Hannah has to take a trip to Scotland, Tom finds himself alone and missing Hannah more than he expected. After some soul searching with his buddies, he realizes he is in love with Hannah and is ready to settle down and have a real relationship. But when Hannah returns she has a surprise for Tom. When he shows up with flowers to meet her for dinner, she introduces him to a large strapping man named Colin, played by Kevin McKidd. After Tom collides with a waiter, listens to their romantic story of how they met, and witnesses the sappy look in Hannah's eyes, he is then shocked with the news that they are engaged. Hannah asks Tom to be her Made of Honor. After colliding with another waiter, Tom escapes from the restaurant without really giving Hannah an answer. After Tom recovers from the shock of Hannah's news, his buddies point out that being Hannah's Made of Honor will keep him extremely close to her. They make a plan to steal the bride. What makes this romantic comedy more entertaining than others, is watching men try to tackle a woman's job. Witnessing men making baskets for a bridal shower is great. Through many ups and downs, and a ruined bridal shower thanks to Hannah's bitter cousin, Tom begins to panic because he is running out of time. What's worse is when he gets to Scotland for the wedding, he finds out that Colin is a Duke and his family owns a castle for each season. He starts to feel he cannot compete with the groom. After a day of humiliation from traditional wedding games, Tom finally gets a moment to ask Hannah to go on a walk. Just as he is ready to tell Hannah how he feels, they are interrupted by the other bridesmaids that come to get Hannah for her bachelorette party. The tradition in Scotland is for the bride-to-be to carry around a pot. Men give her money in exchange for a kiss. When Tom finds Hannah in the pub, his peck turns in to a long passionate kiss. The only witness to this kiss was Hannah's mother from across the room.Later that night, Hannah goes to Tom's room to talk about their kiss. Hannah ends up finding her drunk cousin on top of Tom, and thinks Tom is just up to his old ways again. She runs back to her room in tears. Tom tries to run after her to explain he was being seduced and wants nothing to do with her cousin. He begs Hannah to talk to him but she refuses to open her door. Tom tries to confess his love for her through the door, but her stubbornness gets the best of her and she tells him she is marrying Colin in the morning. Tom decides he cannot deal with watching Hannah marry Colin so he leaves the next morning without saying goodbye. As Tom is riding away in the car, he decides he has to stop the wedding and win Hannah back. The only transportation Tom can find to the church is by horse. The camera angles make this scene intense and emotional. While you are laughing at Tom riding the horse, you also feel his anticipation of getting to Hannah. After holding on for dear life through the woods, he flies through the church doors as the horse comes to a screeching halt. Of course this happens just as the priest asks if anyone objects to the marriage. Hannah runs to Tom laying face flat on the church floor. As Tom can barely get to his feet, he tells Hannah that her hair looks terrible but he loves her more than anything. Hannah finally gives in and they share their second kiss. Hannah apologizes to Colin and tells him that he is perfect, but just not perfect for her. Colin knocks Tom out, but the scene quickly changes to Hannah and Tom saying their vows. This was a feel good kind of movie. Don't let the stereotype of romantic comedies deter you from watching this film. This is a good story of two people discovering how much their relationship has truly meant to each of them. The actors in this film are what makes it so believable and touching.
... View MoreThis is an attractively filmed romantic comedy. The Scottish locations are pretty. Monaghan isn't the prettiest actress - sometimes her face looks a bit pig like like a younger Marcia Gay Harden but she's a competent actress. Patrick Dempsey is looking a bit haggard for the role. He's a bit old for this romantic comedy genre. One annoying part of the story - why did she break up with the Scottish fiancé - just cause he won't let her take food from her plate? Trivial. Why her mother prefers Patrick Dempsey is a mystery too.Watch it if you don't have anything else to see but it's not a must see.
