This is a truly terrible movie. Do not watch It is slow, boring and just generally bad. I wanted to turn it off after 20 minutes but my partner wanted to see it through. All the actors seem to be as bored as I was. Warm bodies, Burying the ex, Shaun of the dead all much better options.

Fresh from her funeral, Zach learns that his girlfriend has mysteriously returned from the dead in what seems to be some sort of evil hoax, but he soon discovers that it's no laughing matter. Life After Beth does its best to take a bite out of the indie scene with its quirky dark humor and horror elements but lacks the balanced tone it needed to rise from its own grave. I think this has a lot to do with Jeff Baena's misguided direction that clearly prevents this dark comedy/drama from hitting most of its satirical marks.Considering they only had 22 days for filming and a relatively small budget, one could say this first-time director played his cards quite well, but no compliments can bury the film's countless flaws. I just wish he had taken better advantage of the talented comedians he had access to, rather than take such a serious approach to the material. The film conveys such a deadpan style in so many of its scenes that I couldn't help but crave that extra comedic relief it often lacked. The film's soundtrack certainly doesn't help with its aggressively eerie beats that often drown out the jokes, creating a strange tonal crisis that kills off the beautifully chaotic tongue-in-cheek moments. It's too bad Beana didn't take notes from Edgar Wright's superior zombie romantic comedy, Shaun of the Dead.Focusing on the actors themselves, Aubrey Plaza's commitment to her role alone creates such a powerful screen presence that's definitely worth seeing despite the previously mentioned shortcomings. Dane DeHaan also brings a genuine approach to an everyday romance pressed against bizarre circumstances. But what truly gives this film enough strength to save itself from complete failure is the strong chemistry the lead actors share on screen as the troubled lovers. Unfortunately their story is cut short with little to no explanation of how their relationship used to be before Beth's unfortunate accident, adding to the weakness of this odd plot. It also makes it a lot harder to identify with how things have changed and/or care about their future outcome.Described as a "rom-com-zom-drom," Life After Beth suffers deeply from its obvious identity crisis but manages to offer just enough fun to validate a passing mark. Just don't expect to be scared or have too many laughs.

Yes, it's another zombie film. There are so many these day that they kind of all merge into one, therefore anything that actually stands out among the B-movies that have gone straight to DVD is actually quite rare. 'Life After Beth' is okay. Nothing more. However, when compared to its current crop of rivals, it's actually not all that bad.Zach's girlfriend, Beth, dies and he's naturally heartbroken. Although, it's not all bad as she comes back. She's welcomed back by her grieving parents who are quite happy to put aside the 'hows and the whys' of her resurrection, just so long as they've got their child back. But, as you probably can guess, having a reanimated corpse as a close family member is a recipe for disaster.Yes, she starts out okay to begin with – her slight loss of memory surrounding her untimely demise can easily be blagged. But it doesn't take too long before she's pulling apart small buildings and getting hungrier and hungrier for... well, what do zombies normally eat? If you've seemed 'Warm Bodies' then you probably know the sort of genre we're talking about here. It's a kind of love story for teenagers, but with the undead thrown in. Personally, I preferred 'Warm Bodies' as it was bigger budget and had more to it. Life After Beth is like its poorer cousin. Like I say, it's not a bad film. It has enough black comedy moments to amuse, but there aren't really enough to make it a straight comedy. Nor is there enough gore to class it as a horror. You've basically got a teen romance story which borrows from a few other genres. It doesn't have to be watched by teens. I think it's adult enough to be watched by anyone who's sort of into zombies/horror/black comedy. Just don't expect too much. Everyone plays their part as well as can be expected. Bottom line: if you enjoyed Warm Bodies and are happy to sit through – yet another – zombie film, you might like this. If nothing else it's quite short!

I had heard nothing good about this horror comedy, but it was short and starred Aubrey Plaza, an actress whom I dearly love from the television show Parks & Recreation, so I gave it a go. What do you know, it was a pleasant surprise. There's not much new you can do with zombies, and I can't say this is super original (My Boyfriend's Back comes to mind in particular), but it has a couple of really fun aspects. The zombies in this film are not the brainless, Romero ones, but can talk like normal people. At first, they seem completely normal, but as time passes they start to get more and more aggressive. Plaza is really funny, particularly when she starts getting mean and violent. My favorite thing about the film was the reactions of her parents (John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon), who want nothing more than to keep their daughter's resurrection as quiet as possible and get life back to as normal as they can get it. Her moody boyfriend (Dane DeHaan) wants to tell her the truth, though. I also really liked DeHaan's parents (Paul Reiser and Cheryl Hines). Anna Kendrick also appears as DeHaan's new love interest. Really, they could have cast anyone in that role, so I have to wonder why they spent the money on a named actress.
