Leander Sisters Trailers

“A clever characteristic dance called the 'Yellow Kid.' Very unique. Stage is in the Sutro Baths, San Francisco, Cal., and the audience is composed largely of bathers.” (Edison Catalog)

It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.

The movie runs out of plot and jokes well before the end of a two-hour running time, long for a light comedy.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

Leander Sisters (1897)The great thing about going through the Edison film library is that there are hundreds of early films featuring people no one remembers today but when viewed today we get to see what was a popular act back in the day. This 26-second film takes a look at the Leander Sisters who are doing a dance called "Yellow Kid". According to the Library of Congress, this film was shot in San Francisco as the camera stays still and the two girls dance in front of it. The youngest girl is dressed up as a clown while the older one stays to the left of the frame and there are a few instances where she dances outside the frame. It's doubtful too many people are going to be viewing this film but to those who enjoy this early part of movie history it allows one to see what people were watching back in the day. There's a large number of people in the background watching the dance and it's also interesting to see what they were wearing. Fashion and entertainment has certainly changed but at least we still have these movies available.
