The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.

Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.

The Movie Diorama

The pinnacle of classic cinema. One of the earliest motion pictures to ever be recovered and released. Arguably the most influential and culturally significant sci-fi film of all time. And damn does it still hold up well today. Over 100 years old (released in 1902) and still has the entrancing power to hypnotise me with Méliès' authentic production design. Wow. Just incredible. A group of astronomers build a capsule and launch it in an effort to land on the moon, where they encounter extraterrestrial life. Using his artistry as an illusionist, Méliès was able to capture a staged production on film and utilise his trickery and editing skills to craft a coherent silent story. The layered stage design that Méliès and his team built in his film studio exhumed both imagination and innovation. Shooting a bullet shaped capsule into the moon's eye, astronomers bashing jumping aliens causing them to explode and the capsule falling straight (literally) back down to Earth. It is pure fiction that really hinders on the viewer's imaginative capabilities. Some of Méliès techniques were absolute genius. Ranging from the filming of a fish tank depicting underwater scenes to the infamous panning shot as the camera zooms in on the moon. Méliès didn't just direct these films, he invented them on a practical level. With no dialogue cards, the narrative was told through expressive acting which, whilst came across as exceedingly goofy, added flamboyancy and charm to the picture. There isn't much else to say. This wasn't just any old film that time forgot about, this was a stepping stone that influenced epic features like '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Metropolis'. Without Le Voyage Dans La Lune, we may not have even been introduced to sci-fi pictures for many years after. So for that, I truly am grateful for Méliès' pioneering work. Plus, how often can you say you've seen a film that's over 100 years old? Exactly!

This twelve minute short from famed magician/film-maker George Melies is, quite simply, a spellbinding experience. Due to the lack of dialogue, the film tells its story via a series of pictures. What the film concentrates on most are the special effects, and this film wowed audiences through the apparently magical occurrences appearing on screen. Indeed, these effects are still impressive today, even if its easy to see how they're done. The most memorable image comes when the space ship crashes into the moon's eye - causing it to wince and frown in anger. There are also some excellent moments where our explorers are attacked by jumping goblin creatures which disappear in a puff of smoke when struck. It's all very surreal, especially when we see goddesses sitting on planets and grinning faces appearing in the stars. The plot follows a logical progression from beginning to end, and the sets used are expensively staged and have real depth. Okay, so the film is a bit creaky and jumpy but face it, its nearly a century old and being able to watch it today is simply fantastic. My great-grandparents would have been alive while they were making this. For any fan of the history of cinema, fantastical or not, A TRIP TO THE MOON is a landmark piece not to be missed.

The movie is a simple production today, but in the time when he went to the big screens it was an incredible success. The production shows us about how was the thoughts and the imagination of the people from the beginning of the 20th century: a mind in what the the future could be and where we gonna go with the advance of technology. Because of this and his historical value the film still be presented in all the film classes around the world. Watch this historical story let us be transported to another century in a totally different timeless. I strongly recommend you watch because his effects to the cinematography are huge.a

I can't say that I really enjoy this film because I think that it belongs to a different generation and it is so different from the films I used to watch. In my opinion this movie is quite slow and has not any action, so it becomes quite boring for our standards. On the other hand we have to consider that this film was registered 110 years ago and it changed drastically the history of the cinematography and the way that the film were produced after the 1902. I know the huge progresses that this film meant for the history and that it was produced with just a few technological devices really worse than the cameras that we own nowadays, thus I really appreciate this registration. This are the reasons because of this film is still shown to the film classes around the world. Moreover I think that this film represents in a very detailed way the zeitgeist of this age and this is the cause because of the audience really appreciated it when it debuted. In my opinion the "spirit of the time" was the try to arrive always more far away with the huge technological discoveries that the beginning of the 1900 brought with it. This is the first science-fiction film and it represents this desire of discover that everybody had in that age. For all this reasons, this movie is certainly a timeless film!
