... View MoreVery good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
... View MoreThe ordinary made quirky with an unexpected sense of satisfaction driven forward by its own brand of blundering drollery. A flippant movie with an aim to entertain without losing its charm. Undoubtedly, most know the tropes and motifs seen in many other comparably equivalent pictures. The mixed reviews, strong dislikes, and pour ratings might be unfair and generally misguiding for those wanting to see a decent flick with friends, as this movie isn't supposed to be anything other than what it is: a fun story not meant to take itself seriously at all. It navigated around the pitfalls in attempting to be something that it could never achieve because this type of story could only work as presented. Of course, you know how the story will unfold and what will happen, but the axiomatic homage to earlier movies is manifest to maintain the slapstick, tongue-in- cheek, and farcical. By no means is this a cerebral foray into the genre; however, it is a humour nugget. Indeed, it is a guilty pleasure and a delightful escapade: apparent and entirely conspicuous, but nonetheless amusing, succeeding— surprisingly so—in satiating the need for candid guileless flippancy —it couldn't work any other way. True, the premise is simple and straightforward; there isn't anything new in the plot, characters, and their inevitable goofy crescendo; although, the clichés work and invoke classic 80s' frivolity, permitting the silliness and comedic cringe fairly well without hammering the point too much. Typecasts and stereotypes have their mandatory purpose here, it's why it works, which does not undermine the essential puerile joy of watching a movie like this. Indisputably, this isn't thespianism, high art, or genre busting storytelling, rather it is a good old potboiler of sorts. Formulaic? Yes. Imitative? Yes. Corny and routine well, that's its purpose, which earns it the peculiar praise of owning its flavour of idiosyncratic fun. There are better movies, of course, but don't allow that to detract from the cinematic inevitability of a movie that—if you give it a change—can be pleasantly amusing and let you smile. This is most definitely worth the watch if only for the x-ray vision and press conference scenes.
... View MorePlot; Four men are accidentally bonded with pieces from a hi-tech alien suit of armor and find themselves Earth's only hope against a threat from outer space.Crowdfunded sci-fi slacker comedy is amiable enough, but despite game (if not exactly good) performances and commendable production values for its budget, most of the gags and jokes fall flatter than a 13th century globe. It rallies a bit in the third act, but it's not enough to lift it above mediocre. If you liked the Adam Sandler movie Pixels from a few years ago, you may like Lazer Team as well. Just less.
... View MoreThis is a comedy sci-fi romp, where the 'wrong guys' inadvertently get saddled with technology required to save humanity.A lot of the humour is based around American stereotypes and the flaws of the main characters who are just short of a Wizard of Oz line up. There is a coward, an idiot, a cynic and a jock. With this line-up you can expect a very silly, moronic film. Well it is, but the writing and direction takes it to a place a lot more fun than normal. Yes people do get thumped in the testicles and wedgied - but there is also a fair amount of thought and talent in this. I especially like the idea of the "super trooper" who basically wastes his entire life training to use the armour. The CGI is a little bit lacking but I forgive that for the budget. I don't think this was ever intended to be a piece of movie making history, but it is entreating, the plot does kind of work and the characters are unforgivingly true to themselves.Maybe not a Friday night film but this is definitely good for a chuckle.
... View MoreSpace, including all its paraphernalia, is one arena which has acted as substrate for film of all genres. You name it, space gave it! Even art-house and horror films have been made out of celestial subjects. For example, think of Melancholia (2011), Sunshine (2007) or Under the Skin (2013). To be honest, I'm waiting for a Quentin Tarantino film on space - bloodshed having a field day in space! No matter whatever you'll make having space or aliens, people will see it. In fact 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' (1959) was so badly made that it became memorable! So among its beginning ventures, YouTube Red chose the path of least resistance - space. In 'Lazer Team' a group of four misfits find themselves responsible for the fate of the planet upon discovering an alien crash site containing a battle suit. I must admit that the idea is novel and exciting. The script is decently knit too. (This is the main reason why I reviewed this title.) A somewhat similar concept was tried last year (2015) in 'Absolutely Anything' starring Simon Pegg but that fizzled out too. With a little more effort 'Lazer Team' could have been transformed into a great sci-fi comedy. The subject matter is age-neutral - people of all age groups could've enjoyed it. But the film-makers instead settled for clichéd acts. For example, the character of Mindy (played by Allie DeBerry) was too bawdy. It was like some American Pie or Scary Movie character. Similarly the humour could have been more situational rather than explicit. More experienced actors could have been casted et cetra, et cetra. But, the damage has been done. 'Lazer Team' is another hit-and-run comedy which fails to leave its mark.
