The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

Although Cuba has slowly enacted some reforms in recent years, I am still amazed that the Cuban government allowed this movie to be made. Possibly the fact that Spanish film people contributed partially explains this, though I would have thought that the criticisms of various parts of Cuban culture would have killed the project by the Cuban government. The movie has a lot of jabs aimed at the Cuban government, as well as various aspects of Cuban life. But the jabs don't end there - the movie makes fun of EVERYBODY. I know that some people have objected to the movie's occasional homophobic spirit, though this is balanced by having two homosexual characters who are very likable and deliver some good laughs. In fact, the entire movie is very amusing, and you'll learn a lot about Cuba and the Cuban people that you won't find on the news or in a textbook. The only real flaw in the movie is the digital photography, which often looks weak - though this may have been intentional in order to convey the run down look of Havana. I hope the Cuban government encourages more genre movies - I'd like to see how they would do actioners and science fiction.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I am a Shawn of the dead fan, and was intrigued by the title. However, other than having a buddy similar to "Ed," the film stands on its own. It is interesting that budget was 1.3 million European dollars, but still was so professionally produced. I only hope that the films stars continue to get the publicity that leads to the more established recognition they deserve. There was traditional intrigue, such as an absentee father trying to reconnect to an estranged daughter, along with an interesting dying request from a best friend. Just remember, if plan "A" doesn't work, go to plan "B" (and have a plan "C" ready, just in case).

While most of the lesser efforts in the "zombie genre" tend to eschew the political savvy the genre's de facto creator George Romero himself often employs (relying instead on simply trying to spook or to nauseate their viewers), JUAN OF THE DEAD does it all- and does it well. Juan is just one of what's come to be known in this country as "the one percent"- the people at the very bottom of the financial and political ladder(s); "the Juan percent," if you will, who are often forced to eke out marginal if not outright illegal livings. Employing Romero's method of imparting information via news reports, JUAN OF THE DEAD makes it hysterically if somewhat subtly clear that this whole zombiegeddon thing is an American government mistake gone global (which could prove over-the-top hilarious, given the current state of GOP- George Orwell Propaganda- TV in this country, if someone were to do an even more "biting" satire along the lines of the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD). "We OWN this country," a doddering old movie director proudly proclaimed at a political circle jerk a little more than a week ago. Maybe- but be warned: it could very well come back to bite you in the ***.

After the popularity of Shaun of the Dead, the zombie film culture created by George Romero jumped back center stage with hundreds of films hitting the shelves. Just like every other genre, there are good and bad ones, but when they are bad they are usually unwatchable, but when they work they are great fun. The latest attempt at this genre Juan of the Dead, not only shares a similar title, but takes the same direction of Shaun, but could this Cuban zombie flick have any chance of living up to its potential? Juan of the Dead follows Juan and his rag tag group of friends that try to take advantage of the zombie outbreak by charging people to kill them. With his new found business motto "we'll kill your beloved ones" they set out on a rampage of survival, profit, and carnage. While this film is produced and could be looked at as a rip off of Shaun it sets its own tone to create a funny, bloody good time. The story is pretty simple with just enough story idea to keep the film moving, but not enough to clutter it with unnecessary plot holes. At first it seems like it may be a bit low budget, but quickly showcases some great make-up work with the zombie effects and does not hold back on the blood. Much like most these days it mixes CG and practical effects blood, but is executed great. This film also sports some interesting cast of characters and over the top humor that helps to step this film up to the level deserving of this genre. There is no shortage of zombie killing action as well as some surprisingly creative kills.Don't let the fact that this movie is subtitled deter you from checking it out. This is easily one of the better additions to this genre to come along in some time. Everything about it works to create an over the top zombie killing gore fest that any fans of the genre will love. Even though they aren't directly connected to each other, this is a great companion film to Shaun of the Dead that will hopefully catch on and get the respect it deserves.http://www.examiner.com/movie-in-dallas/bobby-blakey
