A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

... View MoreWell you can't really fault Invasion of the Bee Girls for not having a decent premise. In a small town a series of men turn up dead and it soon transpires that they have been killed by a group of women who have killed them while having wild sex. It seems that these ladies are the bee girls, part human, part insect. Wrapped up underneath their feminine charm they have the deadly killer instinct of the insect, and in particular the urge to kill the male after the mating ritual. This one certainly has enough about it to qualify as a cult movie of sorts. It's an amalgamation of sci-fi and horror with a healthy slice of sexploitation added to the mix for good measure. The female killers of the title make for marvellous villains. They slinkily manoeuvre about town wearing enormous sunglasses, looking every inch like dangerous femme fatales. The highlight of the film as a whole is certainly the bee girl transformation sequence where the ladies convert a new recruit into one of their kind by way of a strange and elaborate device that covers the naked woman in honey and then has her covered in a horde of bees. It's a brilliantly daft yet effective bit of sci-fi hokum and one that is worth the price of admission alone. The bee girls themselves go around humping all manner of pretty unsympathetic men and then doing them in, while we sometimes even get to see things from their POV with what can only be described as a bees-eye-view. It's all great stuff basically. So much so that it really is quite difficult getting behind the government agent who is sent in to investigate and put a stop to this great situation. Boo! Hiss! This is definitely one of the unheralded b-movies of the 70's. It remains relatively left-field and gets far less of a mention than similarish bigger budgeted efforts such as The Stepford Wives (1975). But it really has a lot to offer for seasoned horror and sci-fi buffs, particularly of the specific oh-so-entertaining 70's strand. So, let's hear it for the bee girls – they can sting me any day.
... View MoreInspired 70's b-movie about a colony of bees that manage to infiltrate the minds and bodies of glamorous women, and use them as vessels for a takeover of mankind. Here's the rub, so to speak: they 'sting' their prey during copulation with the male species. Hence the 'R' rating. A bevy of buxom b-movie starlets (and loops, e.g. Rene Bond, Kathy Hilton), work their way around the campus of a university under the watchful eye of the sultry Anitra Ford, as she pilots their take-over of the town of Peckham. Alarmed at the increasing rate of stiffs being wheeled into the morgue, local police captain (Osmond) welcomes Federal agent William Smith (in fine, fighting form) along with bimbo sidekick Victoria Vetri, sent to investigate the strange phenomena.Witty dialogue (courtesy of noted word-smith and director Nicholas Meyer) sets this cult sci-fi apart; Denis Sanders' direction isn't especially taut and momentum does tend to sag, but the constant influx of quirky characters and situations is irresistibly entertaining. Some of the special effects used to depict the bee-vision isn't bad either, considering its vintage. The cast is an interesting assembly of talent, with experience (Smith, Hammer, Osmond, King in particular) offset by rank amateurism. Anitra Ford is a beguiling woman, but her acting talents here are lamentable. Fortunately, her looks do tend to compensate.Don't be mislead by some of the associated press and commentary concerning this film: while it isn't soft porn, nor is it "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" in narrative or technical standard. Disbelief aside, if you can appreciate the dry humour and lusty amateurs who adorn the screen (sometimes being smothered in bee wax for good measure) you should enjoy this, one-of-a-kind movie experience.
... View MoreNow we know how the terrorist slipped through and almost set off a bomb over Detroit. Government agents were busy investigating why men are dying of heart attacks after sex with their wives. This was a running joke in the film as people were advised to avoid sex. That went over well. The basic premise is the takeover of the Earth from men by killing them. Obviously, all me will willingly engage in extramarital sex with any woman who seems willing. The film stars William Smith (Any Which Way You Can, Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn), and features one of the original "Price is Right" models, Anitra Ford, as the Head Bee Girl. Also stars Victoria Vetri, the 1968 Playboy Playmate of the Year (and we do get to see why!).The best scene is when they transform a new widow into a Bee Girl. After the transformation process, Ford plants a big kiss on the new initiate, which drives the other Bee Girls into a frenzy and lots of big natural breasts are exposed.Another great scene occurred when Smith runs into rescue Vetri before she can be transformed. He grabs her naked body like a sack of flour.Great B movie fare.
... View MoreA genetic breakthrough in merging woman and bee has devastating consequences on the male race.."bee girls", with "androgynous" chromosomes, are driven to constantly mate, killing their male targets during the sexual act, due to radiation use causing them to become sterile. I'll spare the scientific mumbo jumbo, but will say that the clever, tongue-in-cheek script from Nicholas Meyer fuses science with fiction, incorporating exploitation elements with witty, sexually frank dialogue that makes this quite a fun little cocktail. Sexy women, some steamy seduction(..or attempted seduction)scenes, and lots of nudity. Really surreal methods in how the female victims are transformed into "bee girls" I won't soon forget anytime soon(..if anything one major transformation sequence, and the sultry Anitra Ford's lengthly seduction of a scientist, will linger in memory for sometime to come). Setting the movie in and around a government research institute means Meyer could explain what was taking place in elaborative detail so that the invasion might contain certain scientific merit. Good cast with the handsome William Smith as a government officer sent down from Washington, Victoria Vetri(..as a stunning woman disguised as a nerd)as a brainy assistant to a scientist whose death was the catalyst for the ongoing investigation, and Cliff Osmond as weary Captain Peters, needing some sort of resolution regarding the growing number of strange heart attacks occurring to men, both young and old. Anitra Ford's mere presence had my heart skipping a beat. With so many beautiful women, this should be an exploitation fan's dream come true, even if the sex isn't explicit, to successfully make a sci-fi flick sexy I consider quite admirable.
