It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.

The story of a girl that caused the dead of his mother when she was a child. That will mark her whole life and her relationships. She lives obsessed by death."I am Dina" has a powerful and promising beginning, but as the story advances everything turns a little bit confusing. It looks like a second rate Bronte sisters tale, and it gets much worst as the ending approaches. Not even that red-head beauty called Maria Bonnevie makes the movie a little more attractive. Boring (big time)*My rate: 4/10

I have no idea why this movie was ever made. The story is so bad that you wont believe it until you see it for yourself. The English language is extremely bad spoken. These actors use to be good (I am from Denmark) but the instructor Ole Bornedal made it possible to destroy their talent totally in this film. The music sucks.Ole Bornedal try to make a international film with actors from all over the world, but he did a very poor job. There's no soul in this movie. But the pictures of nature were nice, - maybe he could be used to make a tourist film from Norway. p.s. Ole Bornedal also made Nightwatch and I liked that one (danish version) Don't waste time on I am Dina. Its not worth it.

Beautiful, intellectual, sexy and sensual Maria Bonnevik made this movie even better than I expected after seeing trailer of the movie in http://www.iamdina.com.Maria, "the Scandinavian Holly Marie Combs but with a real human soul" (of whom I had never seen before), the only Great French performing actor (since Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon have both retired) Gérard Depardieu (the best three thing in France are Renault (the car), Renault (the Cognac) and the French Fries, but I have to admit that adding Gérard to my list would be appropriate thing to do, not only because of this movie) and Christopher Eccleston (who was superb as a chief of police in a British TV series I saw years ago) led the best roles in this movie. In whole, "I am Dina" was one of the "Greater Than Life" movies I have seen. It almost made a grown-up man cry at times - but just almost ;-) Best emotional and intellectual affect since "Forrest Gump" which also had a great effect, not least because of the beautiful music of Alan Silvestri. If something could be done other way to make this perfect Scandinavian movie "even more perfect", I would have 1) changed Bjørn Floberg as her father to somebody more emotional actor or made him show some more feelings in the movie. I have not read the original book so I can not be sure whether his role was well performed or not.2) changed Hans Matheson to Ewan McGregor or alike. With these role changes this would have been a world class movie, but even "as is" it was a huge delight to see.Mads Mikkelsen was absolutely perfect in his role. Now I am eager to see more films from Ole Bornedal, this Great Danish director!

The pictorial language of I am Dina pays tribute and homage to the great directors Bergman and Tarkovski. The characterisazion is well done and psychologically convincing. The cast is well chosen and especiallyMaria Bonneville is a revelation. The overall feeling of the movie is typically Swedish/Nordic : life is a lonely quest with grief and pain always on the doorstep ,tender feelings and worryfree joy are brief escapes from it.Although the movie can be considered Arthouse ,it is a more accesseble one. People who liked The Piano , The Elephant Man, or Camille Claudel must see this picture. Some visuals are such strong statements that will linger on in your mind , for example when young Dina stands before the burning washhouse and her father is going to the boat that will take him to Bergen. This a masterpiece of a visual that is symbolic for the whole movie and narrative. There are only two weakneses in the movie 1 it`s title ,it`s to simple and not convincing ( it should be something like "Amongst the ghosts of loved ones " or shorter " Going away " ). 2 Dina`s stallion sex with a number of men is somewhat unconvincing, it doesn`t express her longing for togetherness but only her strong willpower. But it`s exactly the two of them together that drives her.Willy van Wessel
